keep up with what's new and what's next
Follow along with iReport staffers as we build a new kind of news site.
When iReport.com launched a few months ago, we started off with a set of Community Guidelines that set the ground rules for the site. What's welcome, what's not, what's news. It's pretty simple by design, just a framework for all of us to lean on as we build a brand new kind of news site. But now that we're several weeks and thousands of stories in, it might be time to look at them again. Do you see something that's missing? Let's talk about it in the comments.

It would be nice if say once we post some photos say about 6 and
only 3 get uploaded, if there was a way to put back the balance 3
in someway rather than having to upload it again in a new ireport.
I know ur very busy with a lot of work, and stuff and we are
grateful for this site, it has given me immense pleasure to be with
the CNN iReporters, and I have made a lot of friends too,
especially my good friend Ryn, thank you very much Lila for what u
do, and are still trying to do for us. Great work, and oh, delete
button too please.

Lila,
You have been so modest-Why didnt you announce the new I-report program on CNN International, which featured you? http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/05/01/ireport/index.html Or maybe you did and I missed it, but you did a very nice piece about I-report, its beginnings and intent. It was very nice to put a more in depth detail of your mission here besides just a Jpg clip in your profile. I look forward to seeing what comes of this new site, and perhaps some "CNNy" awards for those very "at the top for those who produce great stories?(Wow-That sure leaves me out!) I think the show will do well. Mark

Some users (from China or Chinese government defenders) have been
sabotaging our posts, comments, etc.
It first started by these people posting 1* ratings to people's commentaries so that they can move up in the line and people see their posts first... In a matter of seconds, your page has a one star rating regardless of what you post, and if someone comes around and gives you a higher rating, another comes immediately to lower it. (they are working in teams) They are stealing others' identities as well by hacking their pages. I actually saw this happen right before my eyes (same pic, same name, but obvious different writing styles/knowledge of the language and opposite ideas) When I posted something against all this happening (and China in general) they IMMEDIATELY took over my page (literally) some with comments that looked like another user (hacking their pic/identity) or by posting huge letters about six times against my commentary all at once. The page swarmed with comments in minutes. Finally, I guess they clicked the review button so my post was flagged as "this user violating the guidelines" (which I am sure i didn't; all i did was speak out against their sabotage and scare tactics) Then (not happy with that) they got into another post of mine (non-related, it was about the US political race) and began to do the same. What can be done??? Please help! i-report is being hacked and we can't get our word out because they have figured out how to flag reviews and make them temporarily null (aside from taking over the lead with so many of them working along side) They either have fake identities, hacked identities or no pic/no profile and just go around creating a ruckus. Maybe by just putting a script people need to fill out would prevent them from doing this (as myspace and facebook do) or possibly fixing some of these glitches (i.e.: can't put a 1* unless person gives their identity or can't do it after a certain number of times) Someone should also monitor this hacking as well. We have the (whole) Chinese government against us... that's a pretty tough cookie to deal with. Thanks Janet

PS they have also been posting links to porn sites on this other
person's posts, which forced me to take my image off (personal pic)
and add an image of a camera

China's posters remain anon and have a habit of stealing both
photos and posting endless copyrighted material which is in
violation of CNN iReport standards.

Well, It looks like we got what we ask for. One of the "said"
reporters finally posted a profile and icon. newssaying has a Real
Nice one.
This is just not appropriate for this site. It is a slap in your face and all ireporters. If is allowed I don't know what will become of ireports. I have noticed a lot of missing legitimate ireporters in the last two or three days. A point was mentioned to me the possibility of using a tool like u tube and view comments before they are posted to our reports and to be able to block commenter's that harass us. Please, there has got to be something we can do. Thank-you for listening Ryn

Like Youtube, CNN could look at giving control of the conversations
of iReports to the posters ... of course this would work with
propagandists who do not have any sense of ethics, but it is likely
that the average person would easily see what is going on.

Ireport could add something to the private page for Ireporters to
block/ignore people whom E mail them, trying to harass them. I feel
sorry for them. This, for the most part is a fun site and hobby for
many. But there are a few here that are either jealous, hostile, or
outright trouble makers to us who are having fun.

Ireporters who are not registered or dont exist should not be
allowed on the site. Like Bobby1205 for starters. Another hacker.

I have been pirated! Someone by the screen name MediaBot LOL has
stolen my screen name and icon. They are posting bull. this has got
to stop. Is there nothing that can be done? I have also tried to up
load two reports tonight and they failed processing. The name
MediaBot was listed as the poster. I pulled up a profile and of
course no face, no profile and no posted reports. They are using
the name MediaBot. Isn't this used by CNN when a report fails to
post? I do this for fun and relaxation, I don't need this
aggravation, it is not worth the stress.
Please help us if at all possible. There has already been a lot of good reporters leave the site. These people have a right to post their own reports, but not to steal others icons and screen names and abuse them. Thank-you for your help on this serious matter. Ryn

This one of the reports that my icon and screenname was stolen and propaganda tacked on to my original comment. Don't know if it is MediaBot or not, but my thinking is yes. I am livid!

Ok Ok so maybe I am wrong about the MediaBot thing. Sorry.
There still is the stolen icon and screen name issue. Hope you can help. I promise not to post anymore about this. Thanks for putting up with me! Ryn

FIRST COLUMN SHOULD BE "MOST RATED" INSTEAD OF "HIGHEST RATED" to
stop this viscious rating down all the time. Within minutes of
submitting any report on any subject we always get rated down with
1 or 2 stars. The person doesn't even have the time to read the
article. This system is really ufair to "rational" people like us.
--All the best! (
this email was sent to me and asked to be posted on here) Please, this sounds like a good idea (or at least add a column of "most times rated") unless people who give out those miserable stars actually have to leave a visible trail and therefore take responsibility for what they do-thanks

Hi, Lila
I tried three different times, three different ways to post on this blog about one of these guys who are using names and changing letters to make them look like the person they are impersonating.. the guy is RedfIag - it won't show up here for some reason but notice that the letter after the f is a capital I (and not a small l). He goes on to my posts and writes the word "junk"... which i admit i in turn did to his two postings -i am pretty fed up with these guys. He also has another users link to a page under his profile, and on his profile, instead of a bio, he has the terms of i-report copied (?) One thing is for someone to not agree with you, another is to harass you. They do this to a lot of people, mainly those who support Tibet. They vandalize people's postings, underrate them and use scare tactics, aside from stealing pictures, identities and using fake names that look like the real thing at first glance. Can we get these people off here? Somehow track their ip's pergaps?

and i flagged his (or hers) two stories for review
| |
|
May 22, 2008 2 months ago |
can we have a drop down menu where when we FLAG something for
review, we can say why (i.e. spam, harassment, racism,
impersonators, etc) and someone check these - i know it's a dbl
edged sword and it can come back to those serious i-reporters, but
you'd have to have someone reviewing it, but once that person
reviewing it gets the hang of it, and starts to recognize the
"usual suspects" we can start weeding them out.

What about the death threats to ireporters?
Not only is the reporter being threatened, but most anyone that makes a comment is also being harassed or threatened. I noticed on one report, no one was commenting and I am sure it was out of fear. This is just too much. The death threats, the vulgar mouth and racist innuendos have many of us afraid to upload posts, or comment on anyone elses report. I am far from being a lawyer, but I thought this sort of thing was against the law.

can we please, pretty please, get a true rich text editor?
Sometimes, when you go back to edit, your story gets all clumped up no matter how many times you try to fix it. I know I hate to read something clumped and it gets confusing. If you could allow us just a bit more space between paragraphs, that would be wonderful!

hey, ha-ha I didn't know I was on here...
Anyway, I think what I am about to propose is a lot more important. I notice people using hateful words toward the gay community. I am not gay, but I know and have friends who are gay and loving people. I personally do NOT have a problem with someone's sexuality BUT I KNOW SOME DO. To each his own, I say (both ways, those who disagree and those who don't... and those who are in fact gay) I know people who use the Bible and their beliefs against gays, and that is fine, although some of us do not go by those rules, BUT THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE when you quote your bible and when you start saying that gay people are just as bad as pedophiles and people practicing bestiality. I find this HIGHLY offensive. Many pedophiles are NOT gay, and people who practice perversions (for lack of a better word) come in all shapes and sizes. If spewing hatred on a certain group: sex, race, ethnicity is not allowed on here (which I agree 100%) why is this? I've just shown my dark side answering back at a couple people haters and I don't want to do this. I want this to be a good experience. Not everyone has to agree, but when people start getting personal, I fight back. Can we please do something about this? Again, I am not talking about shutting people up. I am talking about common decency and respect towards others who are not like you. Stop insulting people for being different.

when are we ever going to get a visible trail of people who
underrate others? it's cowardly what people do - some methodically
go through ALL my postings (even if the posting is about something
not at all controversial) and rate one star one by one, only
because they have a beef with me personally. The problem is the
people who usually do this don't EVER post anything. If there were
a trail, then we'd all know who they were and they'd think twice
before doing that.

I was really shocked and outraged to see how much Anti-Gay Hate
that was found under the search for Gay or Homosexual. I thought
CNN was a little more progressive than to overlook this and do a
story on it. HEY! You might want even to do a story about the Gay's
and issues they face from around the world including the US. Such
things as the Killings in Iran, The arrests of people with HIV/AIDS
and even though the one man they have is straight he is still
charged with gay crimes under there laws in Egypt due to the stigma
of HIV/AIDS being a Gay sickness. You can even look to Iraq where
the so called Morality Police arrest or kill gays so they have to
flee their homeland. Or what about the High Rise since 2005 were
today 6 out of every 10 Homosexuals say that they have been
physically assaulted or have had property damage. Or what about all
the gay men that have been murdered since Mathew Shepard on October
12th., 1998 (Wow, It been 10 years, wonder how many Gay young men
have been killed due to who they are, I know of 3 in personally
know of 3 in Florida and there have been way to much of an increase
in physical attacks. \
Seeing this is Mathew Shepard's 10th anniversary of his brutal murder, maybe CNN will show a heart and do a documentary such as they have given to other issues such as war, religion and Al-Qaida and do with the same passion as the other documentaries in the past and the up coming Black In America that I am excited to see. Just some thoughts for everyone to think about. There was a I-Report says the "Palestinian-Israeli Gay And Lesbian Alliance"(PIGALA) that linked any fall of the Jewish State and Palestine on the Gays from that Region. In TRUTH Pigala is a very small city in Central Africa and there is no "Palestinian-Israeli Gay And Lesbian Alliance." This is on a small glimpse of the types of homophobic propaganda that is out there and in mass publications around the world and the US is not free from this ether! All who promote this kind of bigotry should totally be ashamed but I am sure such reactions are way beyond you or your group. How sad that really is! Signed, Reach out and love one another in piece! |
