iReport drama, unfolded »

We've been looking into recent concerns and rumors about hacking and other inappropriate behavior on iReport.com. A lot of the discussion has been going on in e-mails and private messages between members of the community, so it has taken a little while to get to the bottom of the issue.

Here's what we know:
First, and most importantly, our site developers have not found any indication that the iReport site has been compromised.

  • One iReport.com contributor's personal outside e-mail account was apparently accessed by an outsider, who used that information to contact people she had met through iReport.com. We have set up a new iReport.com account for this user.

  • There also have been a few cases of people sending scam messages via e-mail or private message to members of the iReport.com community. We have banned members for this sort of behavior, since it is in violation of the iReport.com's terms of use. If you get a message like this, or other suspicious e-mails, please let us know by sending a message to report.violations@ireport.com.

It's very important to us that iReport.com is a place where people feel safe to share news stories with others in the community. If you encounter problems here, please let us know by sending a message to contact@ireport.com so we can try to help. And remember, you can check the Community Guidelines, FAQ and iReport.com's Terms of Use for more information about how the site works and what is and isn't welcome here.

And what is being done about multiple accounts used for fraudulent purposes (i.e. rating, commenting, harassment, etc.)?

David - Your concern is appreciated. It's become quite apparent that my iReport account has been compromised and my e-mail address accessed. For the past several days my e-mail server has been timing out every minute or so - not consistently but repeatedly. Then yesterday evening on one of my posts - http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-55845 - the individual who identifies himself (originally herself before a profile change) as "Older" made a cryptic comment about my "son" being sick. My son is not sick and never has been; however, "Older" has referred to another iReport regular, "Bonez", as my son and he was indeed sick a few days ago and he and I exchanged iReport private messsages about it.

Then, in this same post, Older wrote that I needn't sign my post as 'Phantasm" but as GG, my actual initials. Putting these pieces together would seem to indicate very strongly that "Older" or one of his iReport associates has, indeed, hacked into my iReport account and accessed my identity and e-mail address.

Please investigate this - should iReport become known as an unsafe site, it's value will quickly become nil. I would also appreciate being advised as to what you discover. Thanks. "Phantasm"

P.S. As Phantasm says my stuff times out as well, or I have to upload things about three or four times for them to eventually post. I do make sure that my media files are within the limits so I don't know what is causing this.
The email account that is linked to this is also timing out and acting strangely. I have no proof it is this site, however how odd there are more than one on here having the same issues.

Ditto on mshepherd's comment! What is being done, about multiple ratings on posts, or multiple self rating pefect 5 stars? Is this really fair for rating purposes for superstars, when most abide by the rules and come by it the hard, but honest way?

Several of us have noticed that all new, or latest reports are being hit with a one star very quickly after
posting. Honestly it is like someone just waits for a new story to post so they cam slam the one star.Too bad they aren't getting commission for this. It is killing any good ratings we get. Still lots of multiple accounts reporters, that also use the accounts to self rate perfect scores and then one star the rest of us multiple times. What is the point in a rating system that can be abused in either direction. The name calling abusers have found out they can abuse by hitting the one star instead of using their rude mouths and they will not get flagged.
Makes posting seem senseless.
