After the success of our first-ever iReport debate last week,
iReporters are at it again. Journalism students
Jordan
Sarver and
Katy Brown
went head-to-head over Sarah Palin's speech Wednesday at the
Republican National Convention. The two debated Thursday afternoon
by phone on CNN.com Live.
Brown, a college freshman who plans to vote for Sen. John
McCain, said Palin came across as harsh during her speech because
she needed to stand up for herself and show that she could stand up
for her country. Sarver, a Sen. Barack Obama supporter and
journalism graduate student, didn't appreciate Palin's negative
tone. He said the entire Republican convention was coming across as
accusatory, while the atmosphere of the Democratic convention was
"upbeat and hopeful."
Brown and Sarver also weighed in on the mainstream media's
coverage of the campaigns, and both seemed pleased. Sarver said
what he had seen appeared to be fair, and Brown said "maybe we'll
meet the real Sarah Palin" with the increased media coverage.

Curious...the Republicans keep touting McCain's military
credentialing but not ONE Current military soldier, leader or
official has stood up to speak on his behalf and knowledge of
CURRENT war conditions and experiences. Obama had at least 5 that I
can recall at the DNC. You don't have to listen to the Dems or the
general public, listen to the soldiers and CURRENT war vets. I
don't see any military personnel engaged in the Iraq/Afgan war at
the RNC, speaking for McCain. THAT silence speaks VOLUMES.

That is because they are still over there defending your freedom.
The ones who did speak good on them they have earned thier right to
say thier peace. I have been over thier and will most likely
return, although on a Navy ship I will be proud to return so we can
finish what we have started. I do not want us to leave and lose all
that we paid so much for so far. John Mc Cain will not do that.

I'm appalled that John and Cindy McCain and the McCain campaign
would exploit people of color in the manner they did tonight. All
people of color should be offended by the show tonight. Shame on
the McCains!

I have not decided who I will vote for. I am surpised that the RNC
has not had any substance to this convention. They seem to talk
about individuals and not plans of what needs to be done or how
they will address the issues. I was very disappointed in the
arrogant attitude of Sarah Palin as well. She had an opportunity to
discuss issues and she just knocked the democrats. I thought she
was a person that would unite americans. I must say I did however
was very motivated by Barack Obama's speach at the DNC. Im still
learning a lot about all of them. Just my thoughts.

I am surprised at some of the comments that are posted. I think
that RNC is for the party to unite it. The next part is the road
and small town meetings to cover the issues people have.

At the RNC that there is only one group of people that is
represented Older, White males, which don't care one way or another
if things change via they have already had their time. Also if all
of the promises that Sen Mc Cain and Gob Palin can be accomplished,
then why are not any of their plans in effect now b/c if I am not
mistaking thier party is in office right now.
Confused | |
|
September 04, 2008 2 months ago |
The RNC must be an embarassment,it incapsulates all of the reasons
why the United states has alienated themselves from the rest of the
world.
The Republicans do not represent change in any way at all. The RNC has not comprised of anything of any real subastance,or any sign of new direction for a country & world in desperate need...Unfortunately this presidency has a bearing on the rest of the world.... Instead we have been bored stiff with stories of Mccains military experiences and cheap shots at Obama and the democrats. It is obvious that this is because they have nothing of importance to say on real issues they dont even have any new ideas. It´s all repetative #$@#$%!! Rudolf the red nose......what a clown! His speech was disgraceful. How can these people hold public positons? I can´t belive ANYONE buys this nonsense!!!The whole thing is so fake & amateur... one would have to be mentally impared to be swayed by these ridiculous people......if God were to bless America then Obama will be the next president.

Watching the Republican National Convention I realaized why I am so
disgusted with the republican party. McCain has not said what he is
planning on doing in office. He continues to go off on how he is
going to change America. The question is, is HOW? As for Palin, she
is nothing but a sacastic woman who has nothing better to do than
talk down on the opposing party. Republicans may get off on that,
but I for one would like to hear what they can offer us as
Americans than how inexperience the opposing party is. McCain does
not represent the majority of America. McCain is not CHANGE. He's
just the SAME.

I have watched John McCain almost break his arms again(just like
when he was a POW) reaching around to pat his own self on the
back....He needs to get off the cross, we can use the wood
somewhere else. Being a POW does not make you a material for the
U.S. Presidency. He offers nothing new and is a relic of history.
His recent choice of his VP pic only shows that he is already
experiencing
"senior moments" John McCain, your're 72 years old and have served your country proudly....it's time to retire. Let the younger people whose vision is better than yours lead us foward. You have served your time, but it is time for real change. It is a new milineum. You do not offer real hope for a better future. I wish him the best...I am a veteran as well, and John Mccain is not Americas Future.

John McCain's speech was great... Extremely motivational...
interestingly a lot of similarities with motivational speeches by
someone who was remembered during World War I and II. Check out one
of his motivational speech lines.
"In starting and waging a war it is not right that matters, but victory." Adolf Hitler The focus should be on collaboration, making the world a peaceful place, helping the economy, reducing global warming, crime, guns, improving health care, fighting diseases like cancer, diabetes, etc.

I am curious to know what Palin gives her baby while on stage. I
mean seriously have you ever seen a baby that age sleep for that
long, and I am talking about this baby doesn't move.....Is it
real??? Through the speeches I could understand because I would
sleep too but the fireworks and the yelling, and just all of that
noise. I have never seen a baby sleep like that. Please let me
know, maybe I can use it on my kids. This is scain and I approved
this message.

Bravo!! John McCain had all the right stuff to share and to help to
motivate the listeners. For the people who share his values and
dreams for a better America, it was direct and to the point. He
reaffirmed our choice. He established his credentials to be the
candidate for President. To those who may have been undecided, he
gave good reason for them to consider him and to know he was for
them and would work to earn their trust. He gave reasons for being
involved and empowered others to be involved to help make the
changes they desire. That takes leadership and that is why he will
win the election in November!

I think that Mccain and Palin are trying to brainwash all of us.
The Republicans kind of figured it out that they can't talk about
any issues, and all in RNC I heard them mentioning about Mccain's
military story, no disrespect but if he is trying to make us feel
pity and persuade us to give him our votes, it is just foolishness
because his past is not our future. And let me make something clear
about the statement Barack Obama made "Above his Pay grade", this
is about a choice that a female has to make whether to have an
abortion or to give a birth. If you think Palin thinks that she is
a Pro life then let's see what's her response to this question,
Assuming if she had to live on welfare, is pregnant and had to make
a choice whether to give a birth to a child when she can't even
afford to support it? HMMM, something to think abt.

I listen to John McCain speech on Thursday to see if he had
anything to offer me. John McCain said
He "believe everyone has something to contribute and deserves the opportunity to reach their God-given potential, from the boy whose descendants arrived on the Mayflower to the Latina daughter of migrant workers. We're all God's children, and we're all Americans." My problem with this is if the republican party is the party of Abraham Lincoln that free the slaves and push the civil rights movement. How could he not mention the descendants of slaves. This man is out of touch with the American people and how can African Americans look to the republican party as a party of the people.

First of all, Sarah in the Bible had a son named Isaac or Ike. Any
meaning? We shall see. Moving on, I, as an American who might be
forced to have Palin as a heartbeat away from being my president,
want the people involved in Troopergate to come on Good Morning
America. They have everyone else on that show. It appears that
Palin is bringing more problems to a White House that has an
abundance of them already. She seems to be more trouble than she is
worth. We need more problems and troubles like we need a hole in
the head. She just is not vice-president material. Just because she
is the female version of a bully doesn't mean she would make a good
vice-president. While the Obama/Biden ticket is relatively
pristine, the McCain/Palin ticket is polluted and fraught with
controversy that is building by the hour. Her brother-in-law was on
CNN today and looked like he was scared to death. Has his life been
threatened if he says the wrong things against Palin? I smell much
hot treachery in cold Alaska, and Palin has her hockey mom mits all
over it!

John McCain is doing the same thing Bush did. They claim to be of
one America, when in fact they care only about themselves--the
wealthy. It is pretty straight forward when McCain continuiously
claims that Barak Obam wants to raise your taxes--who is he
speaking too--the top 5% wage earners.
The republican have become very good at persuading people that if you don't vote Republican your against your country--not patriotic. Well, if one really cares about their country they will ensure that those who are disabled and can't work are insured, they will ensure that those who do not have the skills to do well in the 21st century have the opportunity to learn new skills and grow professionally and financially. It is the responsibily of every country on earth to care for its citizens. The republicans wish to do away with labor unions and government programs for those in need. They don't believe in a minimum wage and feel health insurance and Social Security should be privatized so they can profit on the needs of others. They believe in less government when it suits their agenda; more government control when it don't. Instead of promoting an environment where companies must innovate and become more productive to compete in a global market--they prefer lower wages, which are most often found in foriegn countries. The Democrats on the other hand wish to empower all Americans to grow and prosper; they believe in helping those in need. When it gets down to it all the candidates are good and talented people--it is their belief system that we need to look at. Which party offers hope for the most people? Which part sees One America as all the people--every single one of them? The wealthiest people in this country could not have experienced the success they have without the working people, and it is time the working people are rewarded for their sacrifices; it is time for the wealthy to give back. So don't feel like you are betrying your country if you don't vote republican. The Clinton administration provided our country with the best eight years ever, and taxes where what they where, how can anyone say that high taxes are the problem? Trickle down economics don't work!!! If you love your country and all the people that make it up--vote democrat.

THE FINAL DEATH THROES OF THE RNC
I'm thrilled with McCain's speech. He made sweeping broad general statements that a staffer wrote for him and ended his speech with FIGHT WITH ME! He voted with Bush 90% of the time, so that means he's 10% Maverick? His voting record tells me that he didn't seem to think that reform was needed until this election year. He acts as if he's an outsider in Washington who did not have Bushes ear for the past 8 years! It has solidified for me that the Republicans are out of touch with what is going on with the world and prefer war at all costs over diplomacy. It's a big world and we all have to share it. I am tired of the ethnocentric behavior of the Republican party. Sarah Palin's policies are not in line with progress for women and her beliefs are exactly the opposite of Hillary Clintons. I'm more determined than ever to bring change to Washington by voting for Obama. He may not have all the answers either, but it's time for a fresh perspective.
|
September 05, 2008 2 months ago |
To a large extent I agree with you. The Bush administration sent
the economy into a tail spin. The McCain-Palin ticket is simply
offensive -- McCain represents the status quo, among other things,
and Palin, at best, was selected with the presumption that
disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters would vote on gender lines,
not on the issues. She, at a minimum, and politely, is too
conservative. However, the Democrats have proven contradictory to
their call for change by selecting Biden for Vice President -- an
older White male who has been in Washington a very long time and
is, quite frankly, part of the estabilisment, regardless of the
party affiliation. Just because he is a Democrat, which is
preferable to conservatives to my mind, does not mean that it is a
radical change. It may be change, but it isn't all that big,
really. Biden represents something rather more centrist than Obama
and Clinton. So much for change.
| |
|
September 05, 2008 2 months ago |
I agree that Biden may be part of the establishment. That's why his
name is second on the ticket. He has the foreign policy experience
and perspective the Obama could use. You have to have someone there
to tell you what mistakes have been made in the past in order to
not repeat them in the future. Sure he's been there a mighty long
time, but I'm guessing not as long as McCain. I listened to Biden's
message and looked at some of the things he's done (bills on
domestic violence against women, and the Crime bill that put more
cops on the street) He may not be a spring chicken, but I'm OK with
that.

On another note, Obama rolled out some ads this week that were
pretty damning to McCain. Basically the facts on his voting record
and him practically miming George Bush. I really can't wait until
the debates to have Obama ask the 10% Maverick that if he believes
Washingtion is so broken why did he vote with Bush 90% of the time
right down his party lines.Last night he was a blue sheep in red
wolfs clothing. McCains in some trouble if he's planning to roll
out inexperience ads which he took off the table by choosing Palin.
He may use the tack that the Veep doesn't need foreign policy
experience.....but I ask you where is Cheney? Georgia......that's
where!!!!

Whitehouse and many other areas! They have the experience as I
don't see Obama having anywhere near the experience to run this
country!!! I can get up there and tell you the same things as Obama
but who knows HOW to put the change in motion: McCain &
Palin!!! McCain has a record of doing for Americans not just his
party! They are experienced on economics to better ways produce
cleaner energy and help with healthcare. MOST OF ALL I CAN"T SLEEP

PROTECT OUR COUNTRY! WHEN DID HE SERVE OUR COUNTRY?

Regardless of your political slant, I think it is tough to deny
that John McCain was absolutely inspiring last night. Some have
commented that there were not enough specifics on his plan - in my
view this was not the forum - the former has been discussed all
through the campaign. I appreciated getting more personal insights
into this Presidential candidate.

One of the things that bother me about McCain and it was reinforced
in his speach last night is his overpowering willingness and desire
to "Fight". Count how many times he uses the words "Fight" when he
speacks. The problem I have with that is his representation that he
has the ability to reach across party lines and bring people
together. Well, in my ecperience, one cannot bring sides together
by fighting with them. Strong negotiating skills and a friendly
approach always works better...You Know..."You can catch more flies
with honey than with vinigar".

I Served as an Infantry Sergeant during the Viet Nam Conflict and
don't think much about anyone who surrenders without firing a shot.
A grunt gets into real dog fights slugging it out, not many
Infantry POW's, It is either fight it out to the death or be
tortured, Empty your weapon on the enemy then consider the last
bullet for yourself or be tortured. Flyboys are pancies, they get
scared and surrender at first availibal opportunity. Sitting in the
cockpit of a jet bomber they are disconnected from the realities of
head to head combat. Empty your weapon first, try to shoot your way
out of it or die trying.

I'm really offended by the way inwhich People are proclaiming John
McCain, as a Hero for his time spent as a POW, John McCain was
suppose to adhere to the same Military Code Of Conduct that every
other Serviceman had swore to uphold, And as a Officer and indivual
in a Leadership position, He was suppose to set the example, Not be
an exception to the Rules, And I'am very interested in asking John
McCain, about the Statement he wrote when he claim that he had
broken in regards to his feeling so Dishonorable that he was a
Black Criminal, This is from his own Biography, And should be
explained by him, not his handler's or supporter's.

I am not affiliated to any of the parties. As most Americans I am
waiting to see the debates and determine who will represent America
the best (not a specific gender or race but Americans). The only
comment I do have from McCain's speech last night is from the
reaction and comment that he made about a person protesting. He
called a protestor noise and static in the background. It might
have not been the best forum to express the public's frustration
but no presidential candidate should dismiss a person representing
the voice of the people that he will be working for in such a way.
These noises in the background represent the voters that are
affected directly by the war, a bad economy and (as we saw this
morning) high rates of unemployment. We are in such predicaments
because our current Government continues to ignore the noises in
the background (and McCain agrees to these allegations). My advice
to both candidates is to start listening very closely to these
noises in the background because they will get you elected as the
next President of the United States.

McCain's speech was good; what I needed to hear was an outline of
an economic proposal for a better economy. I had hoped to hear an
outline of a healthcare plan that would allow senior citizens to
afford their medication. I had hopes he would address the
un-employment issue that is now projected to be 7% by next summer.
Does he really understand how hard it is to make it to work
everyday with gas at $3.50 a gallon? Do you really think any of the
delegates at the RNC are worried about a gallon of Milk that costs
$4.00? Do you think they can identify with us struggling middle
class that scrounges around for change so our children can have
lunch money? NOT ONE WORD DID THEY SAY ABOUT US! I wonder if McCain
checked the market to see what the DOW had closed at yesterday
evening. My friends, if you are familiar with economics, you'll
know that this percentage of unemployment represents a recession.
McCain focused on cutting government spending. I didn't hear
anything about cutting OUR taxes so we can increase our spending in
the economy. The Republican government spends 10 billion dollars a
month on the war in Iraq. A war McCain supported with Busch, a war
that we now know had no evidence of nuclear weapons. A war that was
not supposed to be a war against countries but a war against
terrorism!
Obama promises to cut OUR taxes by 95%, put people back to work, save what's left of our manufacturing jobs that are the backbone of this middle class society and stop incentives to business's that ship our manufacturing jobs over seas. He also promises that we can go to school and college. I sure would like to have help going back to college. I have to pay out of pocket to become a better, smarter citizen. Has it been so long ago, we as American citizens have forgotten about 3 MILE ISLAND??? Nuclear Power- where and how are we going to dispose of Nuclear Waste? Is that the solution for our energy crisis? McCain wants off-shore drilling; "drill baby drill", can we afford to prolong the inevitable of fossil fuel dependence? These are all issues that Obama has accepted; these are issues that he has a plan to CHANGE. I'm not ready to pay higher taxes because government spending is cut. I'm not ready to see our children play in streams contaminated by leaking nuclear waste. I'm tired of filling up my car for 65 to 70 dollars with fossil fuel that's an ideology as old as the dinosaurs. I want change, I want to progress into the future not relive the same last eight years. I support diplomatic negations with countries rather than invasion of a country like Pakistan who do have nuclear missiles because they can! Do you want the SAME or do really want the CHANGE. I'm for change, I'm for Obama! THE DIFFERENCE WE CAN COUNT ON!

Obama has the intellect and the ability to assume the presidency,
and he has a vice-president that is more than capable of filling
in. Obama will fill his cabinet with non-crony, non-obligatory,
non-selfserving intellectuals that are more than capable of
advising him, without prejudice. Obama has promised change from day
ONE, and has never accepted public funds from lobbyists, or the
like. He owes NOBODY any favors.
McCain supports "Big Oil" with their big tax breaks while making BILLIONS, and while he is making MILLIONS. What are YOU making. Are YOU middle-income according to McCain, or according to your monthly budget. Trust me, he won't be giving the real middle-incomers, like YOU any breaks-the breaks will go to to the 2 MILLION, FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR+ a year,"middle-income" crowd. All he's going to give YOU is four more year's of the last eight years-the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. Don't be duped by the meaningless, fortune-supported rhetoric that we ALL heard eight and four years ago.

Here's a clue for both sides how to save our economy! Why dont the
politicians CUT Their pay for the first time in over 200 years
Instead of GIVING themselves raises. Not asking a lot only 5% cut
would do wonders alone!! By the way was ANY of my tax money used to
pay for any of McCains homes?? Has anyone looked into that? Huh?
Did Michelle wear a $$$ dress like McCain's "2nd" wife...NOT!! Dont
forget wifey no# 1, bet she's not living in one of those 7/9
houses!!

Think of the old tune called "VOLARE" and here is a verse about
Obama: Obama, oh oh
Obama, no no no no He just doesn't get it!!! John McCain is the right person to be the next President of the United States. He has proven over & over that he puts his country first. His proven experience in foreign policy will help us abroad and to attack the issues on the home front as well. What we need are more "TIGER'S" which is the new accronym that means: TRUTH INTEGRITY GRIT ENERGY RESPECT Qualities McCain/Palin have and so many more. Wake up America, vote McCain/Palin Nov 4 Together, we can show the entire world our can-do spirit. By the way, I am responsible for this new accronym and I believe it very strongly.

I watched both speeches of Palin and McCain and I find it
incredible that anyone could watch this repeat of HOW TO DUPE THE NATION AND WIN THE WHITE HOUSE BY CARL ROVE. We have the NEW candidate Palin whom we dont know anything about other then the sketchy bio that McCain and company has presented us with. No one has been allowed to interview her. SHE IS A PIG IN A POKE OR SHOULD I SAY A PITBULL IN A POKE. The American will be voting for a candidate with a scrubbed past like GW. An evangelical convert bent on bringing EVERYONE INTO THE FOLD WHETHER THEY WANT TO OR NOT and whose very childrens birth records and her school records are sealed documents. SOUND FAMILIAR. We even find out that AMERICA FIRST statement is only for us. She sold the pipeland in Alaska to CANADA and the oil goes to Japan. IT APPEARS THAT THE LOWER 48 ISNT PART OF HER AMERICA. John McCain claims he's AMERICA FIRST but ALL HIS MANTRAS IS DRILL DRILL AND INTERNATIONAL INTEREST RECEIVE ALL THE BENEFITS OF AMERICAN RESOURCES AND TREASURY. What we really have here is McCain is impending senility THAT APPARENTLY CAUSES HIM TO NOT REMEMBER WHAT IS REALLY IS FOR FROM ONE SPEECH TO THE NEXT. PALIN WILL REMEMBER THOUGH. SHE IS THE PERFECT REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE. A "STEPFORD WIFE". You wind the key in her back and she GRABS HER GUN GOES OUT AND KILLS BREAKFAST, SKINS AND COOKS IT, GETS THE KIDS TO SCHOOL, GOES TO TEXAS GOES IN LABOR, COMES BACK TO ALASKA HAS HER BABY. RESTS FOR HALF AND HOUR, GOES TO WORK, FIRES THE DEPARTMENT HEAD, ARRANGES A HIT ON HER BROTHER IN LAW, ACCEPTS HER NOMINATIO, LEARNS HER SPEECH, CONVINCES THE PUBLIC SHE IS ABLE TO BE ALL THINGS TO EVERYBODY ALL WITH HER LIPSTICK STILL IN PLACE. Whew!!! Now if she would just answer a few questions from the press and public.

I just retired from the military (22 years)and did 2 tours in IRAQ
the most recent ending in june of this year. They try to paint a
pretty picture of this war but its far from it. The surge MCcain
takes credit for is because to Iraqi militias and al-Sadr made
deals to have his neighborhoods re-built with guess what american
money. So the main part of the surge purpose is all hype. Take it
from someone that was on the ground there. The locals have no
interest in bombing americans now because they are being paid off
and thing are being done for them. The Iraqis themself don't like
foreign fighters anyway so they dealt with them. The surge is a
smoke screen that was put into play when the republican got scared
of losing the white house. bottom line the military over there is
doing an outstanding job but are being pushed to the limits and
many will tell you that. prime case suicides in the military are up
drastically up from pre-Iraq invasion/occupation. Look it up

MCCAIN'S AFFAIR WITH CINDY WHILE MARRIED TO CAROL SHEPP FRACTURED
HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH
FORMER PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-divorce11-2008jul11,0,6546861.story John McCain says Reagan was his hero. He also admits to having an affair that broke up his marriage to Carol Shepp his former wife.He wants the public to believe he will be honorable Like president Reagen but it is not in his character. CHECK THIS WEBPAGE OUT http://phoenix.about.com/od/politiciansfromarizona/a/johnmccain_2.htm Remember last February, after the NY Times reported on rumors of an affair between John McCain and lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, how Cindy McCain ardently defended her husband?: "More importantly, my children and I not only trust my husband, but know that he would never do anything to not only disappoint our family, but disappoint the people of America. He's a man of great character." Give us a break Cindy...That quote just stuck in my head because it was so patently absurd. As the Los Angeles Times reported, Cindy McCain met and began dating John McCain when he was married. So, Cindy met John when he was cheating on his wife, but she knows he'd never cheat on his wife. Come On America Wake Up...The voters want the truth if you would cheat on your wife, you'll cheat on "the people" plain and simple truth and fact. America is not blind to that fact and this not from The Obama Campaign, this is from one (1) concerned voter.I agree The McCain Campaign will give us more of the same. John Mccain will say anything to get in the White House.Lets take a look where the LAST EIGHT (8) years have brought us while Mr. McCain voted 95% of the time with President Bush. The only reason Mr. Mccain chose Sarah palin was to pickup the votes from Hillary Clinton Voters. What an insult that is the intelligence of the WOMEN Voters across the country.

Leave it to the REPUBLICANS to cleanup the protesters from the
streets of St.Paul so they dont have to deal with them. This proves
they dont want to deal with what the people have to say, they want
them arrested till their party is over. Mr. Mccain has (8)
residences and a wife who is a multi-millionaire these are not
ordinary people. The McCains residence in La Jolla California went
into forclosure for default of property taxes a few years back and
they have the money to pay these taxes. So what does that tell you
about the McCains. They are FAR less affected by what the middle
class income people have been going through. They actually have no
clue.We need someone in the WHITE HOUSE that will work for the
people not their own agenda.
Be Careful America... Cindys speech did not come across as honest it seemed staged and phoney to say the least. This speech was written for her as was Sarah Palin's was.A very staged attempt to win America over.Joe Lieberman must have been paid a great amount to end up at RNC. That speaks volumes about him. Being a P.O.W does not give you the experience or ability to run the USA. That story has been so over-told to get the public to sympathize with 72 yr.old McCain.Service over Self is that what that was? America wants the facts not your Vietnam story. We want the truth Mr. McCain plain and simple something you just don't have the ability to give us.
