Hey there, photo clubbers! A couple weeks ago, we asked you to get your hands on a fancy lens and to play around with fisheye photography. This type of lens distorts anything that isn’t in the center of the image. The result is a beautiful, powerful distortion.
frobozzz sent in an image of a ghoulish ringmaster, demonstrating how a fisheye treatment can enhance the photo. DKolbay’s vintage Volkswagen bug was at the other end of the spectrum, proving that this type of photography can be subtle. And as JoyfulGypsy showed us, who can resist a little boy playing pattycake?
Thanks for sending in all these fun fisheye photos. Be sure to check out the next photo challenge: Before and After .

Hi zdan: I hate to be a sort of scrooge, since my name is Duckitude... But.
I don't remember the assignment being just "fun" fisheye photographs. In fact, currently, you are asking for "fisheye photographs" without the term "fun" in front of it.
Fisheyes are not just for "fun." Maybe you should pick some serious fisheye photographs to highlight. I would suggest mine, but, that would give you all the excuse to pick on me for being jealous or something. (You can start ranting now....)
But, actually, my beef is with your editorial style in terms of your appreciation of the real power of the fisheye, which is not just for "fun" but for some serious compositions which cannot take place without the use of the fisheye.
I would say do your readers a favor and allow them to experience something other than the gimmicky use of fisheyes. It trivializes the word "photography." |

Hey ducktitude, thanks for the feedback. Yes, there's much more to fisheye photos than fun distortions. For example, DKolbay's photo was taken after he'd spent months restoring his car.
What are your suggestions for future photography assignments? There's so much we can do, and I'd like to hear your two cents. |

Hi Zdan: Thanks for the reply. I think I already indicated a need for spotlighting some of the more "serious" fisheye work. If you don't like that suggestion, just say so.
As for the merits of restoring a car, I am not sure how that fits with photographic images. Is it the image or is it the work restoring the car that counts?
As for future assignments, how about sports photography -- different sports per assignment, not just sports, in general. Maybe water sports, basketball, baseball, etc., underwater photography... I mean the list could go on. I haven't been around here that long, so I don't know what you have done before.
Macrophotographs of nature subjects (insects, small animals, small plants), or mechnical subjects, everyday objects, can be a challenge for photographers.
Take care. |
