Howdy all.  I'm busy at work today and can't stay long.  However, I just wanted to make a couple of suggestions for the Photo Club.  How about changing the Photo Club challenge every week and putting up a definite deadline?  Also, how about featuring the selected photos in a weekly montage, like what is done with the photos submitted in the Travel Section?

I think that for me right now, is health care. You do not know how depressing it is to go to a clinic and see people who don't have insurance have to pay to get better health and then get a prescription for a very expensive medication...and for those who have health care have to fill out endless paperwork...so for me health care, but there's many to chose from.

Split screen, formal style, with the intention on finding common ground. Real person to real person, rather than talking heads.

With a few software changes a debate lineup where one can challenge another report and view in a continuum would be a feature unique to this site. Video debates,,,,

nsaidi A real debate could be set up on a blog with regular teams and a moderator. Post the debating rules ahead of time. Viewers could then "vote" on who they think won.

I I think we should be able to remove our own posts.  I know I've made posts I don't necessarily like.

Margo's idea would make it easier to realize now, but not as dynamic a discussion. Maybe as a front runner to actual interactive debates?

@everyone -- There are ways that we could do it now that aren't quite as elegant, but would get the point across. If you have an idea of someone you want to debate, you could shoot them a PM, discuss what topic you want to talk about and decide who goes first.  Then the second person could post their counter argument and link to the original one.

The rest of debate could play out in the comments.

Thanks EWillies, I was very pleased to have been forwarded that e-mail from a relative. I thought it could shed some light on a situation that is not well understood.

I think the flamers can stay and watch the video debates... We do not necessarily want 100 people in a video debate. You may want to have configurable number for a debate and when that max of joiners are reached, no more in that group... Flamers can then give their written "statuses" on the debate.

davidw That kind of stuff goes on now, with all the "tit-for-tat" ireports. "I saw a post by an iReporter who said..." Some of the comments garnered are little more than personal attacks.

@Margot707 -- we've actually done something quite similar to that, the "head-to-head" blog posts. Here's an example:

I make typos all the time, so I think we should be able to edit our comments.  And after we edit them, a notification would also appear with your comment.  Many sites do this, and it would look like this:

@Paradis -- We don't let users remove their own posts for a couple of reasons. First we want iReport.com to be as close to a true record of what was going on at a particular point in time. Secondly, we don't want to be a position where someone removes a story that we're planning to use for CNN coverage.

In some cases we will remove stories at a user's request, but we prefer not to.

I like davidW's idea as a start.

I think I would enjoy just hearing each point of view just with out the name calling

Is anyone paying attention to the request of removing unwanted post or those that didn't load correctly?

@Paradis -- I'll talk to our developers about the comment editing. That might be a good idea. There are pros and cons to doing it, but it's worth thinking about.

What I would suggest is as follows:

1) iReporter put up a story.

2) Any valid iReporter then click a challenge button that brings up the information to upload the challenge video.

3) Challenged iReporter click on Respond button to his challenger and so forth.

One could put a max number of challenges he may want to address etc.

I've noticed some pics or posts that don't load, but mine are removed or post without the pics that didn't load eventually

I think that if you find a reasonable person on here, with an idea that opposes yours; you can write them and ask them for a debate in which the purpose is finding common ground and compromise.

Or the ireport staff can match us up..lol.

Robjh1 I've sent several requests to iReports to have failed posts removed which have been ignored. Eventually the posts get buried and forgotten in your old stuff as time goes by.

@robjh1 -- We are paying attention to the problem with failed posts. The difficulty is that when a story fails, the tool for removing the story also fails. That means we have to get a developer to do it manually if they can.

I'm looking to see if we can get a better way of handling these stories.

EWillies sounds good and others could watch?

I know that everyone is not equal in tech capability, but I have also uploaded without a webcam, by filming on my digital camera (not camorder) and uploading it. Where there is a will, there is a way.

As a user site maybe the debates should be unmoderated as long as a language rule put out by CNN is adhered to... To keep it as open as possible?

@Liberty1955 sometimes duplicate posts are removed, but when pictures don't show up on the site, it's usually an upload issue either with the file itself or our upload system. Another something we are looking into.

@Margot707 Failed posts show up on your "my stuff" page but don't necessarily show up in public; only you can see them. Usually there's no need to remove them. It can be good to leave them in case they might somehow come back in the short term.

That way no one can accuse the CNN producers of taking sides.

I love all the MJ posts. A person like that doesn't com along often and he deserves it!

@ireport staff: This might have been covered in a previous meeting, but what is the selection process for a story to get the CNN tag. It appears the time of day a story is uploaded gets the privilege or the person submitting. Granted all Ireporters and reports or good, but there appears to be a selected group who receive this tag. Is their a criteria. If so, do share with all.  I have been iundated with PM and emails asking.

EWillies1961 Debate moderators only ask the questions and make sure everyone talks in turn. In formal debates, they have no other interactions.

@davidw: It's so easy for us to request things, but I keep on forgetting about the technical input that comes with it.  So much to research and put together, I just want you to know that I appreciate you listening to our ideas.

@robjh1 -- There are a lot of factors that play into what stories we approve for use on CNN. We don't put the ON CNN stamp on any story unless we've verified the information and that the submitter actually took the photo or video.

We keep a close eye on the site and look for things that we think would be an interesting addition to CNN's coverage.

Unfortunately, we can't approve every great iReport that makes it to the site.

@robjh1 The On CNN tag denotes stories that we're looking at and hoping to use on CNN. I'm always looking for good stuff, as is everyone else here. What gets the tag depends on the story itself as well as the news priorities for that day, along with the kind of material we already have on a particular topic. There are so many factors that govern what is tagged that I don't think there's any one theory you can apply.

EWillies That's what i thought we were talking about - real time debates either on a blog or live web cam. iReports has televised live debates in the past.

Live debates would be neat. As a software engineer I know the logistics in a forum like this would be rather difficult. Of course our great producers here at CNN have very deep pockets so they may do that as well. Right Davidw:).

Hey, I simply think all of you guys are doing a great job. Giving the listener a platform is worth more than you guys could possibly know.

Sorry, just got here and finished reading through the threads. The debate idea sounds fine, until it degenerates into a he said/she said type of thing. Just look at active posts now. Regardless of rebuttal types, there are some that call all Republicans un-American, un-patriotic, repugnicans, etc., some who actually worship the ground that President Obama walks on, and others who feel that President Bush was the Devil incarnate. So I think a live report/debate would actually not be productive at all.

That is the idea behind debates. For debates that get out of hand the producers simply pull the plug on the offending ones. There is a solution for everything, including healthcare.

@mab91c -- I think there would be ways to do it without it degenerating into name calling. In fact, we won't do it until we can be sure that we can at least minimize the nastiness.

I'm pretty happy to say that things have settled down quite a bit in the last couple of weeks and that most people are treating each other pretty nicely.

Gotta run and catch my plan to LA. I will report live if I make it.

Many of us here try and be civil and have sn honest and open debate/discussions, but as usually happens, it quickly falls apart when others come to the fry and start with the name calling. So again, I think a live debate were just be more polarizing than anything else. Just my personal opinion.

I'm back, Debates are good and I'm all for them. My challenge is sometimes the debate goes on my post when I'm not there..is there someway a text message could be sent to my cell phone and if I'm home can get involved before the (my) debate is over? LOL

Late again,, chores....  I read the debate thread, its a great idea... 

I really admire Micheal Jackson always has and always will.  Has anyone considered he may have been in such a painful state that he is experimenting with cryogenics? Has anyone thought that he may be in a comatose state of being? Micheal Jackson being dead?!! That's a crock of crap; couldn't be he is to Bad to die!! I felt for John Lennon that was a tragic loss and death; I mean look at all of our celebs who just die at an early age - what is going on in the entertainment industry that takes our icons, our mentors, our successful people, our peers and if Micheal has passed over it's his families fault since they are Jehovahs witnesses and that cult does not believe in blood transfusions, Micheal was wise enough to pull himself away from that madness, anyway point being is with all the surgeries he has experienced, even at a young age with the burns he sustained doing the Pepsi commercial at some phase he would have had to have blood transfusions and his families belief would have blocked that procedure that would have prevented him having further complications with his health maybe blood transfusions.  I am so adamant about investigating this tragic, horrible episode in this wonderful, talented mans' life.  I am so sure he was suffering since I have done some work as an actress I know how stressful that career is to ones' energy, peace of mind, and focus.

Michael Jackson…..”The Man in the Mirror”

When one looks into the water of the seas, can they tell the depth? Can they see the life that explodes in color and swirls in movement or can they only see the stillness of the surf and call the waters quiet?  To assume someone else’s reality viewed from your own perspective is vastly arrogant. The complexity of the inner intricacies cannot be appreciated only by the outward mechanics. Yet we, as a society, watch from afar and then give ourselves the right to judge the validity of many people and situations. For me, one of the most tragic stories which played out in plain sight, without interruption or pause for concern, was Michael Jackson’s life and legacy. The story of a child hammered into a mold of his father’s egotistical design. A psychological “thriller” that changed the very soul of a little boy as he disappeared into the protective cover of a fantasy existence; lost in an illusion that could never hurt him. A psychological shift of such seismic catastrophic significance, it created a fault line which separated the public persona from the ravaged psyche of the private persona. This is the Michael Jackson story.

The portrait of a troubled spirit began to be painted in the early days of his life. Raised in a crowded home with no personal space of his own, including even his twin bed he spared with one of his brothers. A quiet, unassuming mother, religiously immersed with the laws of Jehovah’s Witness doctrine, pragmatically developed his belief system. The frustrated, authoritarian style of his overly controlling, violent father seared his carefree innocence. Never allowed to experience the freedom of childhood whimsicalness, his spirit became encapsulated. Exposed to the physical betrayals of the flesh by his father and the flagrant disregard of his spiritual teachings ignited an inner storm. Affirmation came only with the act of performing—an expression of freedom. While the stage persona was groomed, the authentic persona was thrown into turmoil and initiated an inward retreat. The child within him felt most at peace while surrounded with other children. Chronologically and maturational a man, emotionally from within his retreated psyche he was still a child. The distortions of his worlds were psychologically night and day. He functioned off stage only within the safety of his fantasy.

As time progressed the intertwining of the two worlds began to become more then apparent to a starkly judgmental society. There was increased speculation and accusations of a lifestyle way outside what might be considered “normal” Dave Walsh was quoted as saying during an interview, “ Despite accusations and indictments, this self-proclaimed king continues to rule the world where the bizarre is commonplace and the truth is lost in a cloud of fantasy. How is it possible that a middle-aged man can make such a profound break with reality and be so oblivious to the storm surrounding him?” The lines between fantasy and reality were fading and the repercussions of that for Michael was exposure. The confusion of a child’s broken psyche was now being playing out in the media and the courts.

Although there are many schools of thought surrounding psychological theory, the fundamental concept that history is significant in whom we become, governs my beliefs. To understand the whys and how of our behaviors is grounded in insights into our past experiences and personal truths. “Anyone can become angry—that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way—this is not easy”. (Aristotle, The Nicomacbean Ethics). The unconscious mind has influences which impact our perceptions and short circuit our behaviors. Without understanding and insights into those triggers, we are held captive by reactionary responses. The maps of our past give us direction in our futures. From these beliefs, the employment of psychoanalytic therapy, in this case, would be my modality of chose.

The dynamics of unconsciously motivated behaviors, and their implications—why would a grown man only keep in the company of children—what does that say? Building a child’s paradise complete with rides and calling this your home—who does that?  The concept that the unconscious holds the key to understanding behavioral and personality problems is a major contributor.  Spending a great deal of your public time hidden behind some type of a mask—what is being hidden?   These are behaviors that indicate the break-down of the personality structure. This structure is fueled by the energy of the psyche, which gives insight into the level of disturbance. A grown man which refers to himself as “peter-pan” may be functioning more out of the structural level of ID—set of the instincts, cannot tolerate tension, and never grows up.  A suggestion that the initiation of the dysfunction began early in life, the ego has had a weak developmental influence.

The uses of defense mechanisms, to protect the Ego, are delineated out in this theory, as a means of protecting the ego from being overwhelmed. This again refers back to the stages of the personality development.  Michael seemed to employ many such strategies; not dealing with painful memories or thoughts from his childhood for years, repression, denial of the transition of child to man all together, the ability to become a driving force on stage, confident, controlled, outspoken and connected, reaction formation, just a show. Off stage the persona was more of a freighted, shy, beaten down child, who would quickly regress back into his “never-never-land”, in his own mind.

Michael gave some unconscious insights into his thoughts, through more than just his bizarre behaviors. He gave insight behind the veils of his mind in his music as well. As a little boy he sang a song about “Ben”—a rat. The lyrics of the song are quite telling:

“The two of us need look no more. We both found what we were looking for. With a friend to call my own I’ll never be alone.

You’re always running here and there. You feel you’re not wanted anywhere. If you ever look behind and don’t like what you find, there something you should know. You have a place to go.”

Tracing some of Michael’s music through the years tells us, he has been telling us for years right out in plain sight—the slow, steady retreat into self.

Pulling back the veil, which obscures our past experiences, also skews our view and our judgments. The use of free association works as the breeze, allowing for the veil to be gently brushed aside, even momentarily, for a glimpse of the hidden. The power of the hidden rests in its stealth existence. One must see it—in order to defeat it. Bias, assumptions, and miscalculations, are always based in ignorance—the lack of knowledge pertaining to a particular subject matter. Giving meaning and insight into the hidden, influential, unrecognized powers, which have manipulated your every thought and action—is life changing. Interpretation allows someone to see from a less distorted vantage point, a healthier perspective. Not often, but sometimes a place to stand where emotionally pushing others away is met with the resistance of them pushing back. To have a place of safety to test your limits and beyond is a personal growth experience. Analysis and interpretation of resistance, is just that; recognition and understanding, of that, which is holding you back.

For Michael the need to explore and learn from the pain of his past was crucial to the health of his future. Locked in his own mind as a child, was being perpetuated by his unconscious choice. The safety net of the fantasy existence was much too small to hold him as an adult. The layered protection he had formed around himself needed to be examined layer by layer. Michael needed to look back at himself with open eyes and an open heart; the pain of the past will lay in wait until that time of reckoning. Once he learned that the fear of the child had been dictating his life, since the time the first chill raised on his spine, only then could he have become truly conscious and chosen to change the course of his personal life.

Fate left Michael without the time required to fulfill this journey of healing. He is now in the arms of his Heavenly Father, and the child will be healed.

THey go around preying on anyone to find something small and fabricate and exxagerate it. I believe whatever you do will always come back to you. The media needs to stop discussing negative things that supposedly involved michael jackson.  This man was destroyed by the press. I am very surprise that no one is addressing the issue of selling your children.Debbie Rowe sold those children to Michael Jackson FOR Millions of dollars.I guess Michael thought he bought them now he owns them .This woman should be charge with selling her children. or is that legal in the United States of America.Gods know who she will sell them too next if she get custody of them.That is probably why she never suggested he should adopt them .the real truth is they do not belong to Michael.and maybe we should put them up for adoption and let the Jacksons legally adopt them.we all know what kind of birth mother they have.One that leaves them with no identity but dollar signs.

I'm still numb.  Can't  believe we will no longer be able to enjoy seeing Michael's smiling face, yes BEAUTIFUL smiling face, hear him sing and see him perform those incredibly sharp dance moves.  There will never be another star that will shine as brightly as Michael Jackson.  GOD BLESS YOU MICHAEL AND I HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THE DEVINE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE THAT YOU SO, SO DESERVE.  GOD BE WITH YOUR CHILDREN & YOUR FAMILY. Since my childhood, i grow up with his music. i first remember the song "one day in your life","ben", and all his current music i really loved. when i first hear the news i was surprised, i dont even believed it, as i am watching the video in the news i was even praying that he can be revived from that situation.and just feel sad, all i did was to hug his records and cry. its very unusual feeling i am feeling right now. I guess he touches everyone's life for all the song, music he composes and touches peoples lives. i gonna miss him and i will love him forever...MJ, your such a great artists, no one could ever replaced you..no one..

WE LOVE YOU MICHEAL JACKSON!!! What a comeback. The best I've seen in my lifetime. L.I.P. (Live In Peace) and thank you God for Micheal's time on Earth. He truly was/is a blessing. We always will miss him. Hug and tell my father thanks and I miss him, see you when I see you.

hi i would to say rest in piece Michael  but why do they continue about your habits, but not Michael Phillps smoking habits and drinking problems. I mean is it because he is still alive that they choose not to say anything. And to think SUBWAy has him on a commercial saying it's time to change. What from not smoking pot to smoking pot. Or is it just because Michael was black that they want to kill his name.
