In the upcoming presidential debates, I will be listening for the
accountability questions.
The American public has been consistently thwarted by the
leading Democrats and Republicns in both houses of Congress
in our attempt to hold the president and vice president
accountable to
the rule of law and the damages caused by wreckless and
deceitful
conspiracies that have wrought adverse consequences upon the
American
people. Between Pelosi and Conyers alone, the efforts by
dozens of
lawmakers led by Dennis Kucinich to impeach both the vic
president and
president have been undermined.
The media has played a major role in downplaying the impeachment
efforts and dismissing the concerns of the American people
regarding the enormous damages families have suffered as a
result of a
war in Iraq conceived of behind closed doors and sold to a
gullible
public by deceitful means.
It is time to hold the Bush administration accountable, and
the media has a responsiblity to bring the issues to light.
In the next presidential campaign the follwing questions must be
asked:
Sens. Obama and McCain, which of you will implement a policy in
Iraq that reverses the course set by president Bush, given the
conclusions of the Senate Intelligenece Committee that the Bush
administration falsely led this country into war?
Sens. Obama and McCain, what will you do as president to hold
the previous administration responsible and accountable
for the carnage it has caused by needlessly sending troops to
Iraq to
kill and be killed? And as senators, what have you done and
are doing
now to ensure this administration is held accountable?
*Sens.
Obama nd McCain, how will address the Bush administration's
secret
prisons, kidnapping and torture policies, as well as the
suspension of
habeas corpus for so-called detainees?* And what, if
anything, will you do to reverse such illegal measures and hold the
administration accountable?
*Sens.
Obama and McCain, the Bush administration set into place the
USA
PATRIOT Act, the Miiitary COmmissions Act and a number of
executive
orders that encroaches upon the freedoms* of the American
public and expands the powers of the executive branch beyond the
intentions of the Constitution.
What will you do as president to restore those powers to the
people and
reverse the trend of encroachment promoted by this
administration?
Furthermore, what will you do to hold this administration
accountable
for ignoring Congress, bullying the Justice Department and
violating
the law?
Sens. Obama and McCain, the CIA has a long history of
undermining and overthrowing governments around the world,
including governments in the Middle East. The CIA is at the
heart of
the secret prisons, kidnapping and torture scandals.
Currently, the
Secretary of Defense (Robert Gates) and his No. 2 guy are
both former
CIA. The former Director of National Intelligence barely held
the job
long enough for Americans to remmber his name (John
Negroponte) when he
stepped down to become the No. 2 guy in the State Department.
Will either of you consider former secret agents as leaders of
the Defense and State departments?
Sens.
Obama and McCain, the Bush administration's approval numbers
are at an
appalling all-time low and the American people do not trust
this
administration. The curtain of secrecy is so thick that even
congressional committees with authorized access have trouble
gaining
access. The media and the American people have been told we
must simply
trust Bush on matters of life and death. *How will your
administrations be different in dealing with a public that
believes it
owns the power of governance and thus must have access to
information?*
Sens. Obama and McCain, will either of you aggressively push for
an indictment
of this administration and hold it legally acountable for the
numerous
breaches of laws and the atrocities it has committed under
the color of
authority?
These questions and others MUST be part of the debate. While
media SHOULD push these questions outside of the debate venue
leading
up to the election, it hasn't thus far and I doubt if it
will. The
media appears complicit in protecting the current
administration, when
the news value of holding this administration accountable is
without a
doubt one of the highest priorities for any news agency.
It is time to push this issue hard.
And if everyone pushes our media to ask questions regarding
accountability, the media editors, producers and publishers
may be
influenced to DO THE RIGHT THING.
But without all of us pushing for the truth, we will not see
it. There
is political will and the media seems to have long abdicated
its role
as government watchdog. Thus, the people can hold a peaceful
revolution
by pushing its media to confront the presidential candidates
on whether
we can expect them to hold this presidential administration
accountable. That question alone will set in motion a wave of
excitement that will sweep across this nation and flood our
representatives' phones with calls to hold this
administration
accountable before it quietly slips out of office.
Of course, I'd like to ask media execs and legislators in
Congress this question:
What happens if the president decides not to step down? What
processes
automatically go into effect? Who leads the effort to
forcibly remove
him?
I know, I know. The question itself is offensive to
some. After all, why would anyone think that a liar, cheat
and
scoundrel of the lowest levels would ever think he could get
away with
exercising actions to exercise power beyond what is granted
in the
Constitution?
