All traffic was closed on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in both
directions around Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights on Monday October 6,
2008. Around 1:15 PM, I was walking on the north end of the
Brooklyn Promenade when I heard a series of 3-4 explosions and saw
smoke begin to billow around the south end of a tunnel near the
Cadman Plaza West exit on the BQE. From the end of the tunnel I was
at, I could see a black car with a crunched hood and further in the
tunnel I could see a larger truck engulfed in smoke and flames. All
other cars that were backed up on the Expressway began to drive in
reverse as much as they could. The fire and smoke lasted about 15
minutes until it was put out by the Fire Department from north side
of the tunnel. I was among the people gathering at the promedade to
see what was happening. We were all were unclear how many cars were
actually in the tunnel and if anyone survived because it didn't
look or sound likely, but we were viewing things only from one end.
The rescue squad came to the south side of the tunnel by climbing
down to the BQE from the promenade. They put a woman from a parked
SUV onto a stretcher and carried her up the hill and onto the
promenade to put her into the ambulance parked on Columbia Heights
street. We could see her arms and legs move, so luckily she must
have survived. The speculation was that she was the driver of the
black car and that she must have run out of the tunnel and was put
into this parked SUV. At the time I left, there was no other word
on what happened to the driver of the truck or anyone else who was
in the vehicles.
