My wife grew up on Maui and my in-laws are still there. We went in March to see the whales - my sixth trip and I had never seen them before. We also brought friends for their first trip. We stayed a few days at the Royal Lahaina on Ka'anapali Beach, where I photographed the sunset. Another first was sunrise at the top of Haleakala Volcano - very cold but worth it! You see a picture of the cinder cones in the crater, in which you could fit Manhattan. We also drove the Hana Road to the Seven Sacred Pools, where I photographed the waterfall. The waves are from Hookipa Beach, a great surfing spot when the wind is blowing in the right direction - it wasn't that day, but I got some very nice pics. The view down into the valley is from Kula Lodge in Upcountry Maui on the side of Haleakala. Can't wait for our next trip!
