Porter Ranch Fire October 2008
October 13, 2008 | Porter Ranch, California | Vetting explained
Leaving work today in Simi Valley and driving to my home in Sherman Oaks became problematic as I ran into a firewall on the 118 freeway.
Dozens of cars ran into smoke too thick to see through and we all turned around the on freeway to escape to more breathable air. Some of us drove off the nearest offramp, but ran into another set of fires and smoke filled canyon (see photo).
As I tried to turn around again my car and the entire area was consumed completely with orange and brown smoke in an apocalyptic-looking situation. Cars were abandoned, people were packing up from their homes very quickly and leaving panicked.
Eventually I was able to get back on the 188 heading west and got away from the suffocating plumes and into fresh air.

The best iReports get vetted and used on CNN platforms.
The label “Not vetted by CNN” lets you know that this story hasn’t been both checked and cleared by a CNN editor.
iReport stories that have a red "CNN iReport" stamp in the corner have been vetted and

on air, or on any of CNN's platforms.
