Outsourcing in the US

We recently submittted an IReport about outsourcing, and boom, the next day we were flooded with hate emails and threats of boycott. People hear the word "outsource" and immediately, they think we are taking precious jobs from Americans and bringing them overseas. While that is generally a typical way of outsourcing, we did it differently. We outsource 90% of the work to US companies--they are mostly small companies that are located in economically-challenged states in the Midwest. It is a win-win situation for everyone. The benefits of outsourcing to US companies are as follows: 1) By outsourcing in areas that have lower cost of living, you can pay less for the same amount of work. While this is not as cheap as bringing it overseas, you have better quality control because of geography and language. 2) There are many challenges of outsourcing overseas. Most often the workers are not very skilled and there is a language barrier. It can be cheap, yes, but it will end up costing you more in the long run due to mistakes, timing and quality issues. 3) With outsourcing, you pay for what you use. For example, our programmer charges us on a per-project basis. This eliminates the need for a full time employee. 4) The skill level of American workers generally is better than those overseas. While overseas workers are more diligent, they face a language and a cultural barrier that can be difficult to overcome. We strongly recommending any company that is thinking about outsourcing take a look at US companies first. It could be one of the best moves you'll ever made.
