Written Response to Father Jay Scott Newman of St. Mary’s in Greenville South Carolina because Some Practicing Catholic Has to do it! If God gave ALL of us free will (or choice) and Jesus died for ALL of our sins, why does anyone have to repent for exercising their free will to freely choose a president, especially when that president fully agrees with God’s proclamation that all of us have free will? Barack Obama does not sin when he believes that our Government should not interfere with a woman’s God’s given right of free will. Her decision is between herself and her God. He states constantly that he wants to reduce the number of abortions by working with all sides on the issue to educate parents and others in the faith based community to educate children on abstinence and other forms of birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies. He also wants to make it easier to adopt children in the United States. Too many people are adopting children from other countries, because it is easier to adopt outside of the United States. There are Catholic supported organizations like Several Sources Shelter that accomplish this very objective. In my opinion, as a practicing Catholic and a religious formation teacher for over eighteen years, the Roe v Wade decision is currently irrelevant, because it is settled law. Even if it can be overturned, like some seem to think, I ask to what end would it be beneficial? If it is overturned, should we punish the woman for murder? Why just the woman? Why not the man or boy who got her pregnant? Isn’t he just as guilty; especially since he contributed to the unwanted pregnancy and oftentimes is the one who pressured the woman into having the abortion in the first place? How about the parents of the male and female, who only taught abstinence and did not feel it morally necessary to teach any other form of birth control? Aren’t these parents also responsible for this unwanted pregnancy? What about the father who encourages his son to have sex without regard for the girl thinking that the father or mother of the girl solely has that responsibility? Doesn’t he have the responsibility to teach his son respect for women; not to pressure or trick a girl into having sex before she is ready; not to lie by telling her that he loves her when he actually doesn’t; or influencing his or her friends to help pressure her into having sex; or attempting to get her drunk to take advantage of her? Or what about the girl who wants to control the boy by telling him she is using birth control when she actually is not, thinking that he will now be forced into marrying her when he feels no such obligation? Aren’t all these people accessories to murder if Roe v Wade is overturned? Who will prosecute these people, really? If no one will prosecute, then why have Roe v Wade overturned? Some people say it will reduce the number of abortions. Really? If someone really wants an abortion why can’t they go to Canada, Mexico or some other country where it would still legal? That will NOT stop abortion, it will just change the location of the abortion. Granted, the repeal of Roe v Wade will give a greater advantage to wealthier Americans who could afford to travel to other countries to obtain safe and clean abortions; leaving poorer, less educated Americans to go back to using more desperate measures, which nobody supports. So where will we be if Roe v. Wade is actually overturned? Ignorant and overreaching Catholic priests (e.g. Father Jay Scott Newman of St. Mary’s in Greenville, South Carolina) and many bishops and cardinals will stop misusing the Holy Eucharist in presidential elections and finally adhere to Jesus’ words the night of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday the first day of the Easter Triduum and the birthday of the priesthood: “Take this ALL of you, this is My body…Take this ALL of you, this is My blood…Do this in memory of Me!” Encouraging all faiths and non-believers on both sides of the issue to join together, united in love and tolerance, towards accomplishing one common goal: to reduce the number of abortions, would also stop making this tragedy a divisive political issue that brings up hatred, bombings and other forms of terrorism. I have come to believe that many people want this issue as a permanent political wedge, rather than solving the problem of abortion. Contrary to what many people are misled to believe, NOBODY is “pro abortion”; most people believe that the American Government should NOT impose its will on its people; especially when God Himself will not!
