It was close to 5 PM today when we showed our identification to the Brea police officer guarding the west entrance to Carbon Canyon. At the corner of Lambert and Valencia fire fighters were still wetting down hot spots in the oil field. As we passed by the horse ranch that was ablaze when we fled we were amazed to see that it was still intact except for the perimeter, which was black. As we turned the corner we saw that both sides of the canyon were scourched to the earth. Finally, there were the flashing amber school crossing lights, and unbelievably there was Hollydale Mobile Home Park looking just like we left it, green trees and all. We chatted with our neighbors recounting our fears and counting our blessings. It didn't take long for us to realize that but for the grace of God; those mobile homes damaged and destroyed could have been ours. Space number 7 and 8 were not at the bottom near the canyon but instead were only two streets over two spaces from the top just like mine. Finally, before we left I was able to thank our heroes; the fire fighters pictured here who came all the way from outside Sacramento to help protect our homes. This Thanksgiving will truly be a special one for me and I will be having it at home this year, a home for which I am truly thankful.
