Big Three Workers Out of TOuch With The Rest of Us
November 21, 2008 | Troy, Ohio | Vetting explained
I am a Nurse Practitioner specializing in pediatrics. And, while I think it is unfortunate that the car industry in America is going under, I am not shocked.
As a teenager I marched in Washington, D.C. for the UAW on solidarity day with my mother who was the vice president of the UAW for a company called Rockwell International (they used to supply car parts for Ford), back in the 90's recession. Even back then, auto workers were warned to either relocate with the jobs, or take severence packages and generous student loan packages. That was a long time ago, and to be quite honest, it seems unintelligent for the workers not to have seen this coming. Everyone has known the big three were not competitive for some time, with the exception of SUV's.
I hate to say this, but even the line workers who are being interviewed on television, seem out of touch with everyone else's reality. I have above a master's degree and am specially trained from a highly prestigious university, and yet I do not even make close to $75 per hour, which is what one news story covering the big three explained. And, I *_literally_ *save lives for a living, in a high stress environment, with no room for error.
These line workers are making twice, sometimes three times the amount of money that licensed professionals are earning - and we have a lot of student loan debt.
Also, many members of my family work for Ford as 2nd and 3rd generation workers. They are the "wealthy ones." The ones who were able to write checks for all four of their children to glide through school on mediocre grades. It always makes me upset when the line workers feel sorry for themselves because they have "SO" had it made, for way too long. Also, this business about paying retired workers health benefits - totally outrageous. I know Pediatricians and Nurse Practitioners who don't even make $75 dollars per hour. In fact, most do not.
A line worker vs. a nurse practitioner/doctor??? Come on!
I own a Ford Mustang right now, and while it is still running, I don't expect it to last much longer. And I have definitely paid a lot in repairs, especially around it's fifth year of ownership. I am not kidding, - if our government bails the big three out, I vow to never, ever buy a Ford again, and will be happy to pass on my opinion to anyone who will listen.
No one is bailing out the healthcare workers, who are making nothing. The rising healthcare costs go straight to the insurance companies, not the people taking care of you.
It's tough out there. Somedays, I regret going through school and extensive training for this, but I have to hope for a light at the end of the school debt tunnel. But, auto-workers, wake up. Have some common sense. If company A makes excellent cars and pay their employees way less, - that company will probably win. It's simple.
Even healthcare is fiercely competitive. We have to compete with overseas nurses being shipped into our country, driving wages down, and having their entire student debt paid in full, just because they are from another country. It is not fair, I agree, but it is reality. I feel your pain, but common sense told my mother and I a long time ago (at our march in Washington for the UAW)- that the big three were doomed unless major changes were in store. That was over 18 years ago!
To the Ford Workers, - everyone is hurting, people who work much harder than you, who have sacrificed more than you, and who have a lot more to lose than you.
I am a healthcare professional, with a very high level of education and training, and I do not even get heatlhcare benefits. Wake up, you guys have been spoiled, big time. It's time to say goodbye unions. Goodbye free healthcare, or healthcare at all, for that matter - because most of us out here are struggling worse than you.
As dedicated as my mother was to the UAW, she told me of many complaints from UAW about workers coming in late and wanting the union to protect their jobs. Your cushioning and pampering in this economy is unfair, - and don't even talk to me about having a hard job. I do what a doctor does for the fraction of the pay. That, my friend, is very hard work.
Very Concerned,
Upset Taxpayer
P.S. And - flying jets to The White House - Come On! The CEO abviously needs a piece of humble pie!
P.P.S. Tell you what, if your CEO promises to pay my student loans off, give me a $2,000 coupon on another Mustang for half its normal price, then I will buy another one of your vehicles, once.
