Handmade Holidays More Than One Blessing
As a twenty year plus floral design veteran, decorating the
Christmas tree was always my pet project. The children all had
their own little trees to decorate anyway they pleased.
Christmas 2007 was a lesson in humility and learning the finest
was not always the best.
My home has always been bursting at the seams with kids and
grandkids. 2007 was certainly no exception. We had a young homeless
family stay with us for a couple of weeks. There were three stair
step little ones, with great expectations for tree decorating. With
my own grandsons mixed in I had about run out of "keep busy"
ideas.
I remembered how I loved to make Christmas chains out of
construction paper, as a young child. We made a trip to the local
craft store and purchased some paper, good old Elmer's glue and
glitter of course.
I cut the strips out and the young ones worked tirelessly all
afternoon on their chain.
In the evening, when their Mom and Dad came in from job
hunting, and seeking help to find a house, we gathered together for
dinner and the decorating of the tree. I closed my eyes for a
moment and turned the kids loose with decorations and told them to
go for it.
I will never forget sweet smiles on those faces when they saw
their chain draped around the tree, so proud and such happy little
kids.
After everyone had gone to bed, I sat on my couch and gazed upon
the tree that had always been my selfish pleasure. Somehow the
Christmas chain made it the most elegant tree it had ever been.
This year the young family have their own home and their own
tree.
I hear they are making a Christmas chain and want us to come and
see.....
