The story about the teen that killed himself online is disturbing
on so many levels. The taunts and lack of caring from those
watching him die, the horrible loss of such a young life, and the
sad knowledge that in a few months, as his disease swung towards
the manic side, suicide would have been the last thought on his
mind.
The attitudes and misconceptions expressed by those that
watched him die, are typical of those that are unfamiliar with or
unwilling to understand the symptoms of this disease. His behavior
prior to his death was very normal for those with this disorder.

If you not familiar with the bipolar disorder, I have
attached some articles that shed some light on this little
understood and much stigmatized disorder.
Depression and suicide:
Depression affects around 12% ( 17.6 million Americans) of
the US population a year. causing havoc ith interpersonal
relationships (family, caretaker, medical and work) of those
affected. Suicide accounts for 32,000 deaths a year in the US (11th
leading cause of death in the US). Almostall people who kill
themselves intentionally have a diagnosable mental disorder.

It is the third leading cause of death among the youth
(15-24 years) and the second leading cause of death in college
students.
Many don't seek treatment because of persistent ignorance and
misconceptions of the disease. Many (including medical
professionals) dismiss the symptoms as a personal weakness or
failing that should be fixed by will alone, leading to
stigmatization of the patient.
Discussion of the causes of depression is complex and beyond
the scope of this ireport, but it is thought to invovle
neurotransmitters and their receptors in the brain. The main ones
identified being serotonin and norepinephrine.
