If the auto companies had built small fuel efficient vehicles a decade or more ago. Who would have purchased them? The auto companies built vehicles that the American people wanted to buy. It takes a few years to get a product from development to production. And in this litigious society they have to make them idiot proof too. Not an easy task. Then there is the health care issue. It is in their best interests to help keep their employees healthy and working. Health care costs are astronomical but that is not the fault of the auto companies. The foriegn auto companies are given huge incentives to build factories and sell cars here. Not so for the big three. Why not tell them, foriegn auto companies, to go home and export their products here with a tariff tacked on. I firmly believe in competition but only if it is on a level playing field. And lest not forget what the auto companies did during World War Two.

The one issue I have with the auto companies is their executive salaries and golden parachutes. That must be restructured to be more in line with labors compensation. If the auto companies fail it will end American manufacturing. We will not make anything anymore. We are already the largest debtor nation in the World. Soon to become a third world country. And I believe it all started with deregulation during the Reagan administration. Quite possible the worst President in American history.
