iReport —

In Southern California, mountain communities in the Kern River Valley are feeling the pressure of a failing economy. Local food banks are experiencing shortages as more residents are seeking their help to survive.

One neighbor heard the need and spread the word. In less than two weeks several residents had volunteered to form a “Caravan for Compassion.”  The Caravan is a food drive that travels across the valley to collect food donations once a month. It stops in Kernville, Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, Mountain Mesa, Southlake and Southfork.

This month’s Caravan was held on November 22. The donations were split between three food banks and plans are in place to continue the efforts every month on the third Saturday.
