Here's a great irony in the Philippines' quest to be an active participant in the international justice system under the United Nations. No less then the President of the Philippines campaigned for it's candidate to the International Court of Justice. During the first week of November, 2008, it failed to win a seat in the ICJ. The candidate blamed the United Nations,U S, U K, France, China, and Russia, and the alleged power game among rich, and powerful nations. Later, the Philippine Permanent Representative to the U N, a former Philippine Supreme Court chief justice, criticized as anomalous the voting process in the UN for the selection in the ICJ. Now, here's the tragic irony- Having failed to be a judge, it found itself as an accused and was found to have violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights or ICCPR by the United Nations Human Rights Committee in the murder of two Filipino activists. The U N Committee said that that Philippine government violated the right of persons to effective remedies, the right to life of every person and the right to liberty and security.
