Thailand Unsafe for Tourists and Expats
November 26, 2008 | Bangkok, Thailand | Vetting explained
After three years as an American expat in Thailand I have grown a thick skin for seemingly scary news stories. In that time the government has been overthrown, there have been multiple bombings, there have been tanks on the streets, a near war with Cambodia and multiple other quasi-disasters. None of them made me feel unsafe in Thailand. The Thai's always left the tourists and expats out of it. They fought amongst themselves in place where non-Thai's rarely went.
This week that all changed. They have taken over the main airport in Thailand and made threats to do a lot more. There have been bombings, protests, attacks and violent demonstrations in main tourist centers in Bangkok and elsewhere.
My concern is not what they have done, my concern is what they may do. This crisis is clearly escelating with the PAD willing to do anything necessary to get the governments attention. They have threatened cutting off all power to Bangkok and I now believe they mean it.
I'm not going to take sides in the conflict, this is up to the Thai's. However no matter how much I love the country, I do not feel safe there. I have left and will not be returning until they resolve their current crisis.
