As a Reese Witherspoon fan, I wanted to love
Four Christmases. However, I left feeling disappointed.
There were a few laughs here and there, but most of the time I felt
that even Vince Vaughn and Witherspoon knew the material wasn't
funny, but they were delivering the lines anyway.
Brad and Kate are an unmarried, self-involved couple who get
out of spending the holidays with their families each year by
saying that they're helping the underprivileged in third-world
countries while they are actually vacationing in exotic locales
like Fiji. When their flights are cancelled due to fog, they are
forced to visit each of their parents (four sets since their
parents are divorced). Robert Duvall plays the slightly redneck
father to Brad and his brothers played by Jon Favreau and the
unrecognizable Tim McGraw.
In one particularly tasteless scene, Kate goes with her mom,
played by Mary Steenburgen, to her preacher boyfriend's church
where Kate and Brad are forced to play Mary and Joseph. Kate gets
stage fright and can't "swaddle" baby Jesus, and Brad steals the
spotlight and embarrasses Kate.
The moral of this story was unsurprisingly that spending time
with family is the most important part of the holiday season.
However, at the end of the film when Brad and Kate have a baby one
year later, you find out that they have not told their families the
good news. This makes absolutely no sense after all they have
learned about the importance of family. Wait and catch this movie
on DVD.
