Shrine of Valor, Bataan, Philippines
December 2, 2008 | Bataan, Philippines | Vetting explained
Pride was the feeling experienced when I saw the Shrine of Valor (Dambana ng Kagitingan) on top of Mt. Samat. It stands 450 feet tall and it serves as a memorial to the defenders who valiantly fought against the invaders from World War 2 in that area.
It was erected in 1966 by President Marcos who served as Lieutenant during the war. The battle of Bataan was one of the final stands against the Japanese in World War 2. War Plan Orange 3 was the battle plan that was followed. This plan was to defend Corregidor and Bataan only to regroup and hold defense for 6 months until relief comes from the US. Through the efforts of the heroes of the defense of Bataan helped slow down the overrunning of Corregidor and gave valuable time to the Allied forces to prepare for war.
The details of the cross are very symbolic and full of details, the carvings showed scenes of bravery from heroes of the Spanish such as Bonifacio and Rizal up to the Japanese invasion scenes.
The roads leading to the top of the mountain is very well maintained. Upon entering the main gates, the first area is the museum and another short climb will lead you to the ground level of the cross.
A must see if you are into historical tour here in the Philippines
