January 5, 2009 | Capitola, California | Vetting explained
January 4th 2009. The smoke was covering the sky lit up by the fire to be seen as far away as West Cliff in Santa Cruz. The smell of plastics, and sulfuric fumes filled the air, rushing water draining off flooding the streets. Road blocks obstructed the Monday morning traffic to one of the only freeway entrances in the area.
It took almost 5 hours for firefighters of Capitola with outside help from neighboring counties to gain control and contain the blaze that was surrounded by a lumber yard, residential homes and restaurants. The building was destroyed in its entirety. The cause is under investigation.
