My family has the good fortune of living near a local farm in Massachusetts. We buy all of our milk (and eggs and ice cream) from them, and it costs significantly less: $2.76 / Gallon. As an additional bonus, they do not use growth hormone or antibiotics like they do in the huge AgriBusiness of today, and the cows are free to roam the pastures. They are fed mostly grass and some corn as well. Milk is not a huge part of our budget, but every bit helps, and if it supports a local farmer who is supplying a wholesome product, this is a great way to support them! To support local vegetable farmers we are using a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm for vegetable this year. They will start their vegetable shares soon, and this is another way to save money and eat more naturally produced food. If it's local, you are not paying to have it shipped, which can save you money. Some shares may still be available in your area. Visit http://www.localharvest.org/csa for more information.
