Crowds gathered Monday outside the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, site of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968. Hundreds of people stood in lines for hours to enter the historic facility on the national holiday commemorating King's work and legacy. More than a decade ago, Congress charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with transforming the holiday day into a national day of service trhoughout various communities.
