iReport —
A happily married woman for 3 1/2 years when my husband talks me into buying a "Megatouch". Why? Because it's the only arcade I know how to play, I never played video games growing up, instead we read and beat the crap out of our siblings. Well, when we got married my husband had a "Mame" machine (I have no idea what that means, other than there's a bunch of games on there, like a bunch) and he had two other arcades stored at his parents house, which I now realize, those two arcades and the purchase of the Megatouch were the starting of my demise. My husband decides after the Megatouch that of he should pick the two up at his parents house. They had something to do with Mr. Doo. I thought it was cool because I could still park in the garage. And then suddenly my husband tells me he's going on a road trip with his best friend, fantastic! His BFF (yup that's what I said) also has the same "collection" that's almost more out of control than the one that "we" have. And he returns with this GARGANTUAN piece of machinery that is somehow supposed to fit into our basement, our split level basement we had to take doors off of hinges, it's huge, people SIT on it, you don't stand next to it and press buttons you sit on it! Who does this? Who keeps these in their houses? And if they do...why...why...why??? It's a Stunnrunner, a what? What are those? I've never even heard of such a thing. At first I think, maybe this is because my husband is 8 years older than me, maybe it's because I'm still a baby and this is what 80's boys do. But then I realize that, no, this isn't because I'm young, this is because I'm sane. This doesn't make sense to me because I'm sane! As time wears on, mysteriously it's harder to park in the garage and the one day impossible. When asked what's going on? My husband tells me about all the deals he's getting on these "classics" and how these could be a "cash cow" for me if anything happens to him. And now a mere 16 months later we have 20 aracades including a pinball machine. Yup, a ding, ding, ding pinball machine. Why do we have these you might ask yourself? Yes, I know I am asking myself. Well, they are all free to play, and I think we've had maybe 10 kids play a total of 5 hours on them, including my husbands children that live with us full time. Instead, like most kids today, they choose the indoor gaming consoles, that take up considerably less space. One day, they'll be worth something but as you all know, they aren't worth anything until they are sold. AND he's collected probably the last 10 of them since our house has been on the market to sell, so we're collecting things to move. And these are not light pieces of equipment here. My husband dreams of a day that his childrens friends will want to hang out at our house and play in the free arcade. It's a cool dream, I don't blame him, but aren't there SMALLER things that kids play these days? Can't we collect, hot wheels, or boards games or maybe decks of cards from cool places, kids like those. Maybe bubble gum, kids LOVE bubble gum, I vote bubblegum!! That's our collection. Tall and proud! I don't even know what we have, I can name like 6 of them. I can't play them, I've tried paperboy a few times but have been badly beaten by my 9 year old step son so I gave up. I guess one day when our new basement is finished and I can park in the garage again the collection will become something I'm more proud of than annoyed by.
