Chaiten Volcano Erupts - No, it isn't snow, this is a shower
of Ash.
Friday, 2nd of May, at approximately 1am- tremors shook
through the night in the small Andean town of Futaleufú
Chile- indications of the volcanic eruption in nearby
Volcán
Michimahuida, a 2442 meter in a remote part of southern Chile
(see map:

Although the character of the eruption is still unknown,
Chilean
authorities are actively engaged in the evacuation of rural
but
populated areas close to the volcano, which are only
accessible by
horse-back.
Here, videos and images from the town of
Futaleufu- nearly 50 miles away- show the ongoing
accumulation of
volcanic ash, a veritable shower!
Consequences for this rural
community are severe- water has been cut, and provisions are
currently
delayed due to heavy ash accumulation on roads- the animals
that could
be saved are being fed with precious winter stocks of grain-
leaving
the future uncertain.
