To Be Young, Gifted & Black in America
May 10, 2008 | Atlanta, Georgia | Vetting explained
Drawing inspiration from the song "To Be Young, Gifted & Black," which was first made popular in the 1970s by Nina Simone, and then redone by Donny Hathaway, my final submission for CNN's "Being Black in America HBCU Contest" features the all-black postpunk-soul band TENDABERRY.
By interviewing the band and other Atlanta University Center students, I attempt to answer the following questions: What does it mean to be young and black in America? Is now a good time to be young and black in America?

The best iReports get vetted and used on CNN platforms.
The label “Not vetted by CNN” lets you know that this story hasn’t been both checked and cleared by a CNN editor.
iReport stories that have a red "CNN iReport" stamp in the corner have been vetted and
cleared. That means they've been selected and approved by a CNN producer to use on CNN,
on air, or on any of CNN's platforms.
