iReport —
PROLOGUE WHERE do you go when your chosen path, paved with purpose and promise, veers suddenly into a mysterious medical minefield? Hope disintegrates into a million shards of despair. Vigor concedes to persistent pain. Homes, once the sanctuary of raucous laughter and cheer, harbor whispers of fear and uncertainty. Even the most astute medical minds have no answers when a rare and insidious disease strikes; especially one with no known cause or cure; especially one most prevalent in the Middle East, Asia and Japan but rare in these United States, affecting only 1 per 2000 people or 0.005 per cent of the population. Imagine then the probability of a young African-American male of Guyanese heritage being diagnosed with such a disease! The odds of winning the lottery are probably greater. But these are my odds. Destiny spins the wheel. Behcet's chooses me. This is my story. My objectives in "Behcet's in Black", are to take the reader on a retrospective journey through the mercurial files of my medical, personal and professional history, to discuss with candor and humility the many blunders and triumphs along the way, and to ultimately create a compelling and didactic portrait of a life detoured, derailed and re-invented by an enigmatic disease. It is my earnest desire that this book be embraced as a resource to help anyone afflicted by chronic illness; that it is used as a guide to help families of the afflicted better navigate the treacherous terrain they must travel to get to higher ground. If at least one aching soul finds solace or inspiration from my story then my labor and suffering would not have been in vain.
