Dear President Obama,

Setting aside all the economic advice I'd like to offer, may I first offer my services for a brief wine appreciation course for you and the first lady, and as many friends as you would like to invite.  This would take just an hour or two and prepare you for heightened enjoyment of wine at state dinners to come.

A wine glass has a stem for more than aesthetic reasons --it allows you to hold the glass without the heat from your hand warming the wine within. And permits you to appreciate the beautiful color of the wine in the bowl, without your fingerprints obscuring your view!

Please don't feel bad; nobody is born knowing this stuff. In this photo published for 'The Swamp' by the Chicago Tribune, of the nine glasses visible raised by governors and their guests, only three are being held as the glass was designed!

Now, honestly, while I work in the wine business, I'm not a wine snob, who cares what people think.  But why not learn just a few tips to enhance your wine experience with honored guests in your beautiful new home.  Especially as head of one of the world's exceptional wine-producing nations...

Our local wines are an economical and relaxing way to entertain at home with family and friends.  The perfect beverage for a troubled economy:  relaxing the worried mind, and supporting domestic producers!

Here's to four years of enjoying the best of our wonderful domestic wines!

ps - If you don't have time for a class, you should read the fun and informative, James- Beard award winning book of my mentor, Karen MacNeil, "The Wine Bible."
