You do have to pay your $2 fare, or use your unlimted MetroCard, but once you're insde the stations, you can discover a variety of performers from all around the city (and the world), showcasing all different instruments and musical styles, dancers. breakdancers, harp players, magicians, you name it. The Transit Authority of New York City runs a program called "Music Under New York" offering performing artists the chance of being discovered while underground. I took the picture on 3/14/09 at the West 4th Street station in Manhattan. I think this is a vibraphone he's playing. The guy was playing "Smile" (the Charlie Chaplin song) and the little kid was completely mesmerized by it. The echo in the station made it even more amazing.
