At least 10 killed in suspected suicide blast in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka North. May 16, 2008. (Defense Ministy)
At least ten people were killed and more than 90 people were hurt in a suicide bomb attack in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo on Friday, the defence ministry and hospital authorities said.

Doctors at the National Hospital in Colombo said eight policemen and two civilians were killed in the blast near the Hilton Hotel in the capital.
The area is a high security zone that is also the site of the Sri Lanka's presidential office and military headquarters.

A man on a motorcycle rammed into a bus carrying policemen during the attack that the military blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels. The Tigers were not immediately available for comment.
"The target was a police bus and a motorbike had crashed into the police bus," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

Witnesses said some window panes of the Hilton hotel were damaged by the explosion but the guests are safe and the hotel gates are now shut.
Ambulances have rushed the injured to the hospital. The defence ministry said many of those hurt were civilians.
