Pillayan, target of bomb blast near Colombo Hilton

Sri Lanka North. May 17, 2008. (Lankadissent)
The newly appointed Chief Minister of the East and the Leader of the TMVP, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan was the target of yesterday's (May 16th) suicide bomb attack near the Colombo Hilton, defence sources reveal.
Military intelligence sources say that the target could be either Pillayan or a VVIP who was to attend the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat.
Pillayan has been residing at the Colombo Hilton Hotel since his arrival in Colombo on May 15th.
Evidence suggests that the plan of the suicide bomber was to target Pillayan while on his way from the Hilton Hotel to the Presidential Secretariat or to Temple Trees, Defence sources add. Security forces suspect that the suicide bomber, who was on a motorcycle, had rammed him into a police anti-riot squad bus after failing to penetrate the tight security imposed in the area.
