Quake survivors relocated to Chengdu suburb
April 6, 2009 | Vetting explained
The first batch of a total of 297 survivors who lost their homes in the massive Sichuan Wenchuan earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province moved to Qionglai City in Chengdu on March 27 from their hometown in Qingchuan County.
They were the first group of a total of 572 immigrants. The survivors left their prefabricated houses in Qingchuan and arrived at the Nanbaoshan Farm, 100 km from downtown Chengdu.
The country government has inspected the farms before they moved. The settlers will enjoy preferential policies for farmers and quake survivors.
The farmers said they felt sad to leave their hometown but were confident about the future.
Apartment buildings, employment stations, hospitals and supermarkets were built before their arrival. Water, electricity, telecommunications and televisions were available at the farm.
The second batch of 275 survivors will be relocated here soon, but the exact date had yet to be decided.
The May 12 major earthquake last year left 87,000 people dead or missing and millions of others homeless According to the government plans, they will be relocated nearby and move into permanent dwellings before October.
