First ride on the infamous Cyclone!
I can recall this event as vividly as if it were yesterday. Back on
a hot July afternoon in 1984, I was on a day trip with a Brooklyn
based inner city Summer Camp. I had always remembered seeing the
Cyclone on those cheesy 80's TV commercials and vowed to ride and
conquer it one day. That oppurtunity came when I had broken off my
group and wondered off towards the beast. I was around 6 years old
and walked up to the line. Back in the day, you used to pay about
$10 for an all-day pass that included 5 rides on the Cyclone. When
I had finally reached the the entry point, I got my card punched
and made my way into the last car at the back. I remember these 2
teenage girls telling me it wasn't safe for me and they offered to
sit on each side of me. I was right in between them both. When we
started to make our way up the ramp, my heart was pounding, I was
nervous but not scared. As soon as the first drop hit, I YELLED SO
HARD my lungs hurt. Circling around the track, my adrenaline was at
an all time high. I had never experienced anything like this! At
such a young age kids are usually fearless and was definitely one
of them. After the ride was over, I went back online and rode it 4
more times with the same pair. When I got back to the meeting
located (if you get lost or separated we were instructed to meet at
the ticket booth) my camp consular found me. I told her I had been
waiting there the entire time and never mentioned a peep of my
experience. These are one of the many fond memories I have of
AstroLand Park that I'll never forget!
