iReport —

I am an educator; I teach mathematics.  Ten years ago, I ran a computer lab at a local junior high school.  I remember vividly walking into the back room of the school library and seeing two other teachers watching the television...it was the news coverage of the Columbine shootings.

In the public schools and in colleges, life was never the same after that day.  It is no longer unheardof for shooters to reak havoc on places of learning.  As an educator, I have to take workshops in how to handle possibly-dangerous students.  Teachers and students are always just a little afraid.

In my experience, Columbine was to Education what 9/11 was to the United States: a shattering wake-up call, a disaster so profound, it permanently changed our world view.
