Tornado in Hungary
May 21, 2008 | Gater,150 km SE to Budapest, Hungary | Vetting explained
A tornado was observed by a storm-chasing team organised on a hungarian amateur
meteorologist site called www.szupercella.hu. The non-profit site was founded by
several young amateur and professional meteorologists to investigate the nature
of the severe phenomena like supercells and tornados in Hungary. On the 20th of
May, the site issued a severe weather forecast to the eastern part of the
country and organised two storm-chasing team to catch the storms by car. They
movement was controlled by a coordinator who provided the information about the
position and propagation of the thunderstorms based on measurements and
forecasts. One team, namely Inflow Band approached a severe rotating
thunderstorm called supercell and they observed as the rotating funnel cloud
reached the ground: a tornado formed. The team superbly recorded the event by
camcorder and camera,as well as,the professional photographer of Blikk, the biggest daily newspaper in Hungary, also chased the storm with team.It was the best documentation of this type of phenomena in
Hungary and this was the first storm-chasing event of the szupercella.hu
launched three weeks ago.
