As a physics student and researcher, my eyes are always on the horizon of technological advancement. Nowhere is such advancement needed as it is in the energy industry. I believe economic motivation to be the only force that could ever break us of our dependance on oil. Until a more efficent and cost effective means for fueling our rising energy needs is found, we will continue to lean heavily on oil. Big oil companies are the only ones who stand to lose anything from a breakthrough in energy technology. They also, however unfortunately, posess the most relavant resources and capability to develop shuch a technology. Is this a conflict of interest? I assume big oil would have us think not. How are these companies investing their recent record profits into progress toward alternative energy sources. Are they at all? Or is what little they are doing only a PR stunt?
