Posssible funnel cloud near Kingsport, TN on Friday May 8, 2009
May 9, 2009 | Kingsport, Tennessee | Vetting explained
At approximately 8:30pm on 5-8-09, I was traveling southbound on interstate 81 when I experienced what I thought was just a patch of heavy rain near Kingsport, TN. As I traveled south, I ran into high winds and hail along I-81, and what I would describe as almost white out conditions, due to the heavy rain and winds. As I emerged from the storm, these are the pictures I captured on my cell phone.
About 8:45pm, I called the National Weather Service office in Morristown, TN to inquire about what I had just seen. I was told that they had detected rotation with this storm, and that a tornado warning had been issued for the City of Gray, TN, which is slightly off of I-26, near Kingsport.
