Blue Caboose, Izzak Walton Inn, Essex, Montana
May 11, 2009 | Essex, Montana | Vetting explained
Considered Mecca by railfans, the Izzak Walton Inn was built in 1939 for use by railroad personnel. It was built next to the rail yard where helper engines are on standby to assist freight trains over the continental divide at Maria Pass a few miles to the east. There are four cabooses here on a hill over looking the Burlington Northern main line. The Blue caboose sleeps four with two double beds. One of the beds is in the back third of the caboose and the other is upstairs in the cupola. The beds are standard size doubles. There are four to choose cabooses to choose from and include the following amenities:
Full baths with shower
Fully equipped kitchenette including:
Two burner stove
Refrigerator/freezer
Microwave
Dishes/ pots and pans
utensils, coffee pot and toaster.
Stocked with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cider
and microwave popcorn.
Each caboose has a deck, chairs, and gas grill overlooking the train tracks with spectacular views. Propane canister may be purchased at the inn. One more thing, the Izzak Walton Inn is a flag stop for Amtrak and is located half way between the east and west entrances to my favorite national park. Glacier. We've stayed there twice and loved it. Amtrak is my favorite mode of transportation and we took it both times. I'm ready to go back right now.
