My Family - From South Georgia
May 25, 2009 | Valdosta, Georgia | Vetting explained
I am 38 years old and have been researching my family tree for at least 8 years and found a wealth of information. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner.
My maternal line has been in the Lowndes County, Georgia area for over 150 years. The surnames that I have researched on this side are: BAKER, BEAL, BOON, DASHER, HILL, MILLER, WATSON, WOLF
I have done the most research on the Millers. The most distant ancestor that I know is Sophia Miller, oral history says that she came from Africa and was bought in Savannah, Georgia. Sophie and her children were freed and appear in the 1850 census for Lowndes County, Georgia (This is unusual because Blacks did not normally appear in the US Census until 1870). Two of Sophia’s sons, Aaron and John Miller, were owners of 480 acres of land. During that time they needed the help of a guardian to buy the land for $1,350. Aaron and John were no older than 19, 20 at the time and my best guest was that their guardian, Hamilton W. Sharpe, was their father (and gave them the money to buy the land). This land was located in an area of Lowndes County, that eventually became Hahira, Georgia.
After the civil war when the union army withdrew from this area, there was a lot of civil unrest. Jefferson Bracewell, Aaron Miller and 110 Black residents migrated to Arthington, Liberia (Africa) with the help of the American Colonization Society in 1871 and 1872. Aaron's brother, John, my 3rd great grandfather was suppose to go the following year, but the trip was cancelled due to the lack of funds. I have found living descendants of some of the families that migrated from Georgia to Liberia (a number of them live in the US).
Aaron Miller died in Liberia, and John Miller became the owner/administrator of the estate. John had two sons Augustus and, Isaac - My 2nd great grand father.
Augustus eventually accumulated over 500 acres; whereas, Isaac had over 400 acres. Eventually most of the land from both families was sold to pay debts, and my 2nd great grandfather Isaac was sued and lost all of his land. Eventually this side of my family moved to Valdosta, Georgia (the county seat for Lowndes).
My paternal line is from Southwest, Georgia (Location: Sylvester, Dawson, Ty Ty, and Albany, Georgia. Many of the SLADES and a few JACKSONS have move to New Jersey). The surnames that I have researched on this side are: GARDNER, HAMILTON, JACKSON, KNIGHTON, LITTLE, NERVY, SLADE.
The following info is more details about my family research.
