Marriage no - civil union yes
May 27, 2009 | Vetting explained
The government has the responsibility to uphold contracts between businesses and individuals. They can also determine who can and cannot enter into a contract – for instance anyone under 18 years of age and convicted felons. It is a horrendous mistake for the government to deny contracts based on sex if the individual is considered an adult! When two people want to live together and share their lives together, they enter into a civil union contract. The government has required that all marriages contain a civil union contract. But a Marriage is a religious entity not a government entity. We confuse the two because the government REQUIRES the civil union be a part of any marriage union, but the two things are very different. If the government wants to control the English vocabulary and declare a marriage as between two individuals of different sexes, then they are getting into the definition of religion and there is supposed to be a specific separation of church and state. It is illegal for the government to establish laws governing religion. It should also be illegal for them to declare that a legal contract between two individuals cannot be established based on sex. Therefore, nothing should be hindering two individuals of the same sex entering into a civil union and the government must uphold that legal document. The government should not be able to require a civil union be a part of a “marriage” since marriage is a religious entity. Once two people have a civil union the government is required to defend that couple’s rights to inheritance and medical records and all the other aspects given to a “married” couple. With the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment by three more states it will be established in the constitution as the 28th amendment. It will then be illegal to keep civil unions from people of the same sex. California has already ratified the ERA and the supreme court of that state should be required to uphold civil unions between anyone of adult age!!! Almost the enitre block of southern states has refused to ratify the ERA!
