iReport —

In the spring I started ripping up the grass in my front yard and putting a vegetable garden in its place. I used rocks I had scavenged from the cemetery (with permission, of course) and recycled glass from the landfill to make the path around the garden. Even though this garden gets much less sunlight than the one in the backyard, I have already gotten tomatoes, peppers, and green beans. The garden serves many other purposes. Cars that used to whiz by now slow down to take a look, making my street much safer for my neighbors and myself. I have also met neighbors I might otherwise not have because I have been spending so much time outside in the front yard. We talk about many things but mostly the possibility of their trading me something for my vegetables or the eggs my chickens produce. This is real community. And it all started with me ripping up the thirsty grass in the front yard.
