iReport —
It is supposed to be against the law to transport a mare to slaughter who is close to having her baby. Four days after being saved from shipping to Mexico where the donkey would have been slaughtered for human consumption she has delivered a beautiful little colt. The question has been asked what would have happened to this newborn baby if they had been shipped to slaughter. There a few gruesome scenarios that could have happened. One the Donkey could have the foal on the jammed packed double decker trailer where the foal would have been trampled to death if it survived the birth. The second scenario is the donkey could have been born on the dry lot in Texas where many kill buyers drop their loads off. The mare and newborn baby would have been left to fend for themselves. The third scenario, is very difficult to imagine, but if the foal had been born on the slaughter house floor he would have been either killed and dumped in the garbage or skinned for his soft baby coat. These are the horrific facts of what our National herd is going through every week. There are simple solutions that are humane to stop this torture. Stop overbreeding. Breed registries need to take responsibility for their promotion of overbreediing and using slaughter as form of culling a herd. Please contact a rescue or sanctuary, many can help you place your horse even if they do not have room at their farm. If the horse is injured or to sick to recover have the horse humanely euthanized. If you can't afford a vet to put your horse to sleep then you shouldn't take the responsibility and cost of owning a horse in the first place.
