iReport —

On Saturday, June 20th thousands of people from around the world participated physically and virtually at the National Rally for Responsible Fatherhood at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The rally fell on the 100th anniversary of Father’s Day and was organized by Dr. Jeffery Johnson, President and CEO of the National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL).

I was honored and blessed to be one of the guest speakers at this historic event which was well attended by Congress members, NFL players and some of the nations leading fatherhood experts.  What was most impressive was the number of fathers and families from diverse backgrounds who stood in the rain and waited out thunderstorms to participate in the rally.

Fathers not only gathered in celebration of their special day, they also came to make a public pledge of responsibility to their families.  The pledge was very moving and exemplified the importance of their lifelong engagement and commitment to parenting.

It has been eight years since my father passed away and Father's Day hasn't been the same. Even though I work with fathers. However, this year I enjoyed bonding with the fathers at the rally and sharing in their day of celebration and commitment.

In a time where most reports in the media highlight the absence of fathers, this event  shed light on a powerful, positive gathering by, for and about fathers.

There was definetly power in the number of fathers in attendance. They proved to be true examples of why we should all celebrate our fathers every day, even if they aren't physically with us!
