Honduras Crisis: Zelaya Is A Threat To Our Democracy
June 26, 2009 | Tegucigalpa, Honduras | Vetting explained
To Whom It May Concern,
I wanted to place a formal complaint in regards to the following news:
" General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann today strongly condemned the attempted coup against the democratically-elected Government of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, calling it a serious threat to democratic rule there, according to a statement delivered late today at a Headquarters press conference.
Through the text read out by the President’s Spokesman, Enrique Yeves, Mr. d’Escoto expressed his deep concern and hope that the rule of law was respected. He appealed to the different parties to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue.
Also according to the statement, the Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, Jorge Arturo Reina Idiaquez, had reported to President d’Escoto that the coup was an attempt to circumvent a plebiscite aimed at enhancing the right to free elections. The Assembly President was closely following the developments and hoped that the constitutional democratic rule prevailed.
In further remarks to correspondents, Mr. d’Escoto expressed his deep concern about “what seems to be transpiring in Central America”. He added: “We were hopeful in Latin America in general, and in Central America in particular, that those ugly days of military coups and these kinds of things and interruption of democratic processes would be something left in the past.” He hoped that the situation would be resolved soon for the good of the people of Honduras and of the whole region.
Mr. Reina Idiaquez, reading a statement on behalf of the “Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América”, denounced the coup against the constitutionally-elected Government in his country and called on the international community to reject “this attempt to break constitutional democratic order”."
I am deeply concerned that such a high body as the UN would dare to express such a position without being more informed as to what is occurring in our country. The so called "democratically-elected Government of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras" is spearheading the force that is trying to disrupt the rule of law in our country. Mr. Zelaya´s is fraudulent inquiry, in all respects, that is aimed at changing one aspect of our constitution, which is that no president can be elected twice. This man who has polarized our society by accusing the higher class of all that is wrong with our country, who has neglected the true economic, social, health, educational and security problems of our nation, is trying to distract the Honduran people from his true intention...centralizing power and doing away with a three power democratic structure. I have referred to Zelaya´s inquiry as fraudulent for the following reasons:
1. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal is the only body empowered with implementing a referendum or plebiscite; said body has declared the inquiry as illegal. The Supreme Court has also deemed it as illegal. Zelaya has neglected the due process of voting within our current democratic structure and proceeded with his inquiry.
2. The Legislative Body of our government has approved a referendum or plebiscite process through which such an inquiry can be made; however Zelaya does not want to adhere to this due process.
3. The voting ballots have been literally imported from Venezuela without supervision or control. The ballots are said to have come already filled out, therefore even if everybody votes no – Zelaya will have his victory.
4. Public employees of the Executive Body have been forced fill out forms supporting the inquiry, if not they lose their jobs. People dependent on the public health system have been asked before being tended to, if they supported the inquiry, if not, their medical requests are ignored.
5. It has been confirmed that an unusual number of Nicaraguan people have crossed the border to Honduras without a definite return date; this as a strategy to have quorum during the inquiry.
6. No internationally recognized body will overlook said inquiry.
7. Several Venezuelan planes have landed
On the ground here in Honduras at least 80% of the people are against the inquiry and are worried about the fact that this is an exact replica of the process that was implemented in Ecuador and Bolivia to centralize power and ensure an indefinite term for the serving "presidents".
Mr. Reina Idiaquez is an infamous communist here in Honduras, enjoying accusations of high treason during his time as a communist activist. The information that was provided is inaccurate and impregnated with ulterior motives.
We do not want a regime similar to Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador or Bolivia in this country...we know that all that we have left is our democracy, we enjoy it and love it. Zelaya´s constant and suspicious contact with Chavez, Ortega and Castro has come to a culmination when all these leaders threatened to intervine in our sovereignty should Zelaya be deposed. This is the reason behind Zelaya´s tactics, he wants to serve this country on a silver platter to Chavez, feeding his communist ambitions for the continent.
I implore the UN to look into the matter more in depth. I would think that if anything happened in this country, if our true sovereignty is violated by outside forces (Venezuelan, Nicaraguan or Cuban) we could turn to the UN for help, but if they think by supporting Zelaya´s presidency they are supporting democracy then they are dead wrong and all for us may be lost.
