A tree, uprooted during a severe afternoon thunderstorm, fell
on to house on Hillcrest Road in Riva, MD. The fall caused severe
damage to the home's roof and pulled down some cable and utility
lines.Several large branches also came down in the back yard and
damaged a fence. High winds, some exeeding 60 mph, were reported at
time of the incident.
The owner was not home at the time and there were no
injuries. A crew was on the scene Sunday morning to extract the
tree from the roof. The storm also brought down another tree in
same neighborhood, destroying a wooden fence.
A tornado warning was in effect at the time of the storm, but
no tornado was reported in Riva. However, a fire department crew in
neighboring Prince Georges County reported a tornado in the
Clinton-Brandywine area at around 2:15 PM. It is not clear if the
tornado touched the ground, but there were reports of debris in the
funnels circulation, indicating a "strong storm system", according
to Mark Brady, a fire department spokesman. There were reports of
downed trees, but no damage to buildings or injuries were reported
in that area.
