Don't Ask Don't Tell Hits the Senate

Kirsten Gillibrand, the Blue Dog Senator from New York, is rumored to be planning to propose an amendment to the Defense Reauthorization bill on Tuesday.

The amendment will suspend "Dont' Ask Don't Tell" for 18 months to end discharging gays from the military. This will be the first time since its inception in 1993, that Senators will be asked to openly state their views on this hot button issue.

If the amendment were to pass, gay-rights leaders expect it would stand a strong chance of being approved by the House and could be signed into law by President Obama, who has expressed his desire for the ban to be lifted.

Representative Pat Murphy is working on developing support for an existing bill in the House to repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell" entirely.

If this measure gets approved, it will circumvent existing regulations which now require the discharge on the average, two soldiers per day.

According to a Gallup Poll taken in May, 69% of Americans approve of the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell."
