[Yu Hwang Wu Korean Language Classroom] How ‘Admissions Office System’, a new trend of the educational world, should be considered?
Recently the largest issue of the educational world is ‘Admissions Office System’. From 2010, about ten thousand students out of the total new students are selected by admission office system. In addition, the government plans to support billions of won to 47 universities including Seoul National University and Yonsei University introducing admissions office system this year.
What is admissions office system at social issue as above?
Admissions office system is a new entrance examination system reflecting students’ potentiality, temperament, aptitude, personality and attitude at the maximum with diverse elements of evaluation, escaping from school records-centered uniform evaluation.
With full-scale introduction of the above admissions office system ahead, each university is very busy to prepare for it. In the private school world, a lot of custom consulting private schools for admissions office system are created. It is also distinguished to be a new trend.
Recently President Lee Myung-Bak said that universities selecting 100% students through admissions office system would be made during his term of office. Thus, now people take more interest in admissions office system than any time.
Considering only the purpose of admissions office system, it has a lot of merits than the existing any educational system. First of all, it has justification in the side of settling problems of private education and university liberalization. According to its plan, the present school records for school records’ sake will be improved and public education will be recovered. Universities will also select good students according to their autonomous standard.
However, as all systems are so, for introduction and settlement of admissions office system, it is necessary to carry out long-term research and to induce social agreement. According to the government’s policy, universities plan to expand admissions office system continuously. However, people worry about it since they think that universities introduce the half-verified system very impatiently.
Especially, a key point of admissions office system is how it will secure its fairness and specialty. For, admission of new students wholly depends on ‘Admissions officer’, an expert of selecting students.
Universities plan to increase admissions officers largely from this year’s entrance examination. However, actually admissions officers are just about 4~15 persons and 89% out of them is contracts and non-regular workers. Therefore, entrance examination irrationality by instability of admissions officers’ position as well as the propriety of their specialty is worried. Shameful things such as a lawsuit may take place.
Anxiety of students’ parents which universities still have high possibility to select high academic achievers preferentially, not students’ potential ability and individuality, although the new system will be introduced, interrupts the introduction of admissions office system.
Therefore, the government and each university should make a thorough preparation and carry out reasonable policy and upright execution for its fairness and specialty so that admissions office system may win confidence from students’ parents and be settled down stably.
“Even under admissions office system with the purpose of raising creative talents, the high school records, university entrance examination and essay-type examination will still be an important index. However, it is also necessary to manage students’ career to appeal to admissions officers by each university” The director of Yu Hwang Wu Korean Language Classroom said “To be so, students should get concrete performances in competitions and volunteering activities associated with majors they want, and prepare carefully for the drawing-up of an essay and man-to-man deep interview.”
