iReport —

The Twin Towers stand as a memorial in the Second Life region of NYC as a reminder to many to Never Forget. On September 11, 2009, people gathered in the virtual world of Second Life to light candles and remember. Many members of the virtual community shared thoughts of loved ones who were impacted by the terrorist attacks as well as ways people could continue to heal. Standing in front of recreations of the World Trade Center created a raw emotional experience and a place for bonding.

“It still hurts. I lost friends there. And I think I don't ever want it to stop hurting” said Saxon StreeterIt, who is a firefighter in real life.  “Yet, I have seen people turn this day in to a Day of Service.  I think service is no finer tribute for those who lived - and died - in the service of their fellow man.”

For the last two years, Cheri Bing has managed the NYC area in Second Life. Her area is representative of the real life city of New York and has attracted people from all over the world to see and experience the city without leaving their homes. For those entire two years, Cheri has maintained a memorial to September 11; likely one of the oldest and long standing memorials within Second Life.

“The first year, I really didn't want anyone coming. I set down candles for myself.  I still had a hard time emotionally to be around other people.  I am fine with it now, actually, this year is first year that I have sent announcements” said Cheri.

For her, the realities of 9/11 are especially raw. Cheri is a real life resident of New York City and works as a web developer. “I feel we should never forget that tragic day of 9/11/01. I think of how our security was so lax. It means to me that we are vulnerable in the USA, not as strong as we used to be.  I wonder about my children’s and their children’s future in this country.”

“However, I never knew how important NYC was to the entire world, as it affected everyone, not just us. We just got the greatest impact” commented Cheri.

The New York region served as a gathering point for many individuals from across the globe to share their wishes. Individuals as far as Korea and Kuwait visited the region to express their feelings. GreyWolf Kuhr, who lives in the United Kingdom, stayed near the Towers for some time. “It was a day that was so unreal, when I saw the plane hit the towers at first I thought it was from a movie but then the full horror hit me. I had tears running down my face as I saw it all unfold; the world will never be the same” he said.

GreyWolf believes that the virtual environment allowed for people to easily find the ability to express remembrance for September 11th. “It is good to see so many people on Second Life that not just remember but that take time out of their day to be here. In SL people from all over the world can come together in one place to remember and pay their respects.”

Reception by observers was positive across the board as individuals respectfully visited the memorial. Yodo Beattie commented that “It is refreshing to see a site in SL that is truly made as a memorial to those who lost their lives on 9-11-01.  This site is very moving and respectful. It is good to see all the people here sharing their grief. It was a day I will never forget.”

The events of 9/11 eight years later still leave many without words. Some of the most impacted individuals were first responders, firefighters and police officers who were on site. The virtual memorial attracted numerous real-life policemen and firemen to observe and pay tribute.

Second Life resident Uri Jefferson serves his community as a police officer.  “Personally I think this is great to have. Beyond all that though, it's sad that we must all meet under these circumstances.  9/11 is a day that will remain with us all eternally, a day of challenge and horror for not only Americans, but for the world.  The fact that someone can plan an act like this is extremely saddening. Our hearts and our prayers are with all of New York and all of the families who lost loved ones.”

Residents at the memorial placed numerous flowers and candles, while observing the recreation of the Towers and various photos. Cindy Bolero supported the memorial by playing the documentary “9/11.” The film was extremely emotional, showing onsite footage of the attacks. Originally, the film makers were following a probationary firefighter through his early period of training when September 11th occurred.

“They tell their story, like no others were able to. The fire crew kept the camera crew with them, and protected them. I've been doing location video for almost 30 years. It is amazing coverage. All very brave people” said Cindy.

“It was an awful tragedy affecting the whole country. Everyone lost someone; even years later. We lost a friend last year to lung cancer from 9/11 fallout. It was a true demonstration of evil; and we cannot fathom how people could be so evil.”

“It was our generation’s biggest tragedy. I am hoping this memorial will reach out across the world thru Second Life” commented Bethlee Spad who watched the film and left a comment in the guest book at the memorial.

Not all areas of Second Life memorializing 9/11 were as popular with many visitors. Some commented that a few individuals used the day to attempt to collect personal funds and/or celebrate the day in a less than solemn atmosphere. Many commented that the NYC area by Cher provided a “tasteful and respectful” approach to remembering the impact of 9/11; making it an excellent community site in the virtual world for people to continue to visit and express themselves.

Regardless, for many people the healing process continues. For Cheri in particular, Second Life has helped her find peace. “SL has helped me to deal with my emotions a lot better, as it makes it a lot easier to get together with others without even leaving home. SL is like one big support group. There are real people behind our avatars.  This may be a virtual world, but it is not just a game.  For instance, in the wee hours this morning, when I couldn't sleep due to 9/11 anxiety, there was no way I could call anyone at that hour. However, in Second Life people have been visiting from all over at all times, thus giving me a cushion of comfort.”
