MBABANE, SWAZILAND – it was a bright and sunny spring morning when almost the entire student body of Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa joined together to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, Peace Day is recognized worldwide on 21 September each year, and is observed as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence” which commemorates “the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.”

My friends and I created a giant human peace sign, using chalk outlines to guide our fellow student participants. Photographs were taken from the top of a hill behind our school field, and about 500 students were involved.
